THE CANADIAN STATESMAN, JANUARY 9,2002 PAGE 7 Ring in the New Year with MPP John O'Toole GM sales best-ever in December DURHAM - End-of-the-ycar sales I made last month the best December , ever lor sales of vehicles for General Motors of Canada. r The automaker delivered 42,415 cars and trucks in December 2001, an 11,8-pcr-ccnt increase over December 2000. Last month, 20,818 cars were sold, up 6.4 per cent, and 21,597 trucks were sold, up 17.5 per cent. "GM dealers and retailers delivered delivered more cars, pickups, sport-utilities, sport-utilities, minivans and cross-over vehicles than any previous December," said Dick Conlin, GM of Canada's vice president of sales, service and marketing. marketing. The good pre-Christmas sales, spurred by zero-per-cent financing, weren't quite enough, however, to push 2001 sales above last year's. GM ' Canada delivered 470,079 vehicles •' last year, down one per cent from 2000. Car sales were down 4.3 per " cent while truck sales increased 2.9 r percent. 'Two-thousand-one was challeng- ■ ing for the overall economy but thanks rl to some truly innovative marketing and award-winning cars and trucks, ' we managed to pull off a very suc- j; ccssful year," Mr. Conlin said. "We said all along 2001 could be our third- •' best yeai' in the past decade and we more than surpassed the previous third ' ' best by over 19,000 vehicles. In fact, we were less than 7,000 vehicles from surpassing our best year ever." During December, sales of the Os- hawa-built Chevrolet Impala ini' ini' creased by 36.9 per cent to 1,872 units " while another Osliawa car, the Buick L Century, saw sales increase by 21.4 "••percent to 1,186. Book deposit policy to be \ reviewed \ CLARINGTON - The Resource 1 Committee for the Durham District School Board is going to take another look at the deposit-for-textbooks pol- " icy at Clarke High School. * The board received a request from - Clarke High School council chairman ' Kaye McOustra and Clarington School Council Association chairman ,J Cathy Abraham, requesting the policy of $30 book deposits be revisited and '- also the legality of withholding the v books to those who don't pay. 1 ■ Clarke High School had a budget '■ shortfall of $16,000 for textbooks this year and because of this, students " have to share the books for some ■"• classes. Many students and parents are not 1 paying the $30 book deposit until the , student receives a full set of books for subjects they are taking. The $30 de- " posit is returned to the students once " they graduate high school. z The Administration Regulation says: "The full amount of the deposit ' of $30 must be on hand before any further books or learning materials " are issued to the student." But because Mrs. McOustra un- ' derstands the Education Act to say education education cannot be withheld from a student, she is questioning the legality legality of the book deposit policy. The request was referred to admin- ; istration for report back to the resource resource committee. Paramedics : take their shots DURHAM -- Paramedics in , Durham Region complied with legis- ! lation that requires them to get the flu shot each year. 1 Michael Dick, head of the local paramedics union, said the paramedics, paramedics, all Durham Region employees, employees, were informed by letter they could be fired if they didn't get flu : shots. So they got them, although "not by choice", he said. "We had basically 100-pcr cent compliance within the time frame, Dec. 21," said Richard Armstrong, the regional director of emergency medical services. The Province added a mandatory flu shot to the list of job rcquirc- . ments for paramedics in 2000, although although it leaves it up to municipalities, municipalities, which run ambulance services, to enforce the legislation. .
