Playing just his second season at forward and his first at the junior level, the lS-year-old Bowmanville resident and bruising right winger for the Port Perry MoJacks has been named the Central Ontario Junior C Hockey League's rookie of the year. "Especially being my first junior year, I really didn't expect this," says Steele, who won the award based on votes from the other five teams in the league. "I've just had really good teammates and I've been getting good opportunities playing forward." One of 11 newcomers to the MoJacks MoJacks this season, Steele now has 23 goals and 50 points in 39 games, leaving him one point shy of current team leader Ryan McQuade. The 6- foot, 210-pound Steele also has 125 penalty minutes. "I didn't quite expect him to be that high in our team scoring, but glad he is," general manager Murray Murray Parliament says of Steele. "He's a big boy, he's got great hands and handles the puck well... He's big and tough, an intense player. He's here to win." Bowmanville trails series 3-0 after pair of last minute losses in Cobourg BY BRAD KELLY Staff Writer COBOURG - All the traditional cliches can be applied to the situation the Bowmanville Eagles find themselves themselves in after three games of their Provincial Junior A East Conference quarterfinal scries against the Cobourg Cougars. Trailing after dropping the first two games of the best-of-seven scries by scores of 4-3 and 5-3, the Eagles were in a must-win situation as the series shifted to the Cobourg Memorial Arena for Game 3 on Monday night. And for 55 minutes of the game, the Eagles looked poised to get back in the series with a victory. But two goals by Cobourg's Ryan Toms in the final five minutes of the third period, the winner with only 28 seconds left in regulation time, provided the Cougars with their third straight win, a 2-1 victory. While the end result wasn't decided decided until the final minute, the turning point occurred much earlier in the third period. Some bad blood between the teams boiled over 1:28 into the third period resulting in the ejection of four Cobourg players and two from Bowmanville. In the aftermath, Bowmanville Bowmanville had a seVen-minute power play, but couldn't add to its 1-0 lead. "We played a terrific hockey game until all that crap happened," said coach and general manager Curtis ANDREW IWANOWSKI/Statesman photo Bowmanville defenceman Kyle Branson ties up Cobourg's Dustin Heenan (23) while goal tender Darryl Bouchard goes down to make a save during Sunday 's game. Hodgins outside a subdued dressing room. "We had all the power-play time and we didn't capitalize. (Cobourg goalie) Chris Hardill won the game for them with four or five great saves. "Once they killed the penalties they had all the momentum and came after us." Game 4 of the series is in Bowmanville Bowmanville Sunday night at 6:30 p.m. The teams were scoreless through the opening two periods until Matt Caruana scored 31 seconds into the third to give Bowmanville a 1-0 lead. That lead stood up until Toms tied the game, and then won it on an innocent looking play that Hodgins referred to as "another, what I consider, weak goal." It was the second time in the series that Bowmanville lost a game in the final seconds. In the series opener, Cobourg pulled out a victory on home ice, scoring the winner with only four seconds left in the game. One night later in Game 2 in Bowmanville, Bowmanville, Cobourg jumped out to a 4- 0 lead and won 5-3. It remains to be seen if the Eagles can overcome two heart-breaking losses and get back into the scries when they face elimination after a live-day break. "We're a little disappointed. It's hard to lose with five minutes left in the game," said forward Nick Stacey. "I think we have a lot more in the tank to come back from this. A lot of teams have come back from three to nothing and I think we can do it. We're going to come out and give them all we've got on Sunday." If Bowmanville wins Game 4 on Sunday, the fifth game of the scries will be in Cobourg Monday at 7 p.m. THE SCOOP - In addition to the fights early in the third, there were two more at the end of the game. Ejected from the game early in the third period were Cobourg's Brock Yates, Mark Cranlcy, Steve Thomas and Brad Whelan, while Bowmanville Bowmanville lost Rob Ebcrle and Dan Caird. At the end of the game, Cobourg's Davin Dymond, Ryan Toms, Kerry Bowman, Rob Montgomery Montgomery and Brandon McCIcan were ejected along with Bowmanville's Andrew Andrew Beck, Matt Caruana, Brad. Wilson and Brian Taylor. Bowmanville's Bowmanville's Colin Baker left the game midway through the third period after incurring his third slick penalty. ^ OSHAWA SOCCER Rough road trip for Oshawa Generals OSHAWA - Only time will tell if it was a significant turning point in the season for the OshawaiGenerals. After opening a three-game road trip with losses in Windsor Thursday and Plymouth Friday; the Generals limped into Sarnia Saturday and promptly fell behind 3-0 just 16 minutes minutes into the first period. While the Generals could have been content to finish the trip with another another defeat, they instead rallied, getting getting two goals from Nathan Hortoh and singles from Chris Minard, Jamie Johnson, Mike Nelson and Tobias Whelan, to score a 6-4 win over the Sting. The win puts the brakes on a four- game losing streak, improving Os- hawa's record to 20-26-5-4. Dr. John Balenko ©623-7412 Dr. Karl Vermeulen ©623-7100 aeiWUU.
