THE CANADIAN STATESMAN, FEBRUARY 27, 2002 PAGE 3 High school students show best works of art BY CRYSTAL CRiMl Sniff Writer CLARINGTON - Residents Residents can take a trip into the minds and talents of teenagers by making a stop at the Visual Arts Centre. Until March, 24, the best art from local high school students will be shown at the VAC, 143 Simpson Avc. in Bow- manvillc. Students from Clarke, Bowmanvillc and Durham Christian high schools and St. Stephen's Secondary School will have about 70 pieces of art professionally professionally displayed and for sale in the annual exhibition titled 'Art from the High Schools.' "It's a lot of work we have here - a lot of paintings, paintings, some prints, and sculptures," said VAC director director Richard Toms. "It's encouraging - most of these students will go onto post-secondary school (for art) and the quality of work is generally high in this area." He says the show is beneficial for schools because because it shows the import-lance import-lance of art programs. Rc- ' cently, Mr. Toms said the r programs have experi- enccd many cutbacks and !!; the exhibition illustrates '• how needed the arts are in schools. "Some arc very impres- sive," he said of the work y in the show. "We have a canvas about six- by cight- . feet. Most students in high y school wouldn't attempt to y do that and it's very so- -. phisticatcd. The technique 1' is fairly advanced in its ; composition. It has a fin- \ ished look some high c school work doesn't have - y I'd say it's almost the ■\ work of a professional artist." In the past, the show has been well-attended and about 150 people are expected to attend the opening reception on Sunday, Sunday, Feb. 24 from 2 to 4 p.m. Being able to professionally professionally display their work is something Mr. Toms says gives the students encouragement. encouragement. Some of the work is for sale. No piece at the exhibition exhibition will be marked with a price. Interested buyers would have to contact the school about making a purchase. Gallery hours are Tuesday Tuesday to Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Thursday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. Admission is free.
