THE CANADIAN STATESMAN, MARCH 6,2002 PAGE 7 Poppy street signs show love for vets CLARINGTON - New street signs arc popping up all over Clarington to honour war veterans. The municipality's opera- - lions department has been busy recently putting up new signs on roads named alter war dead and veterans. The signs clearly ; show the image of a poppy, to honour the war contributions of < the person lor whom the street is named. "These people arc our ulti- " mate volunteers and their legacy legacy should not be forgotten," said Councillor Charlie Trim, who brought to council the idea of adding a poppy emblem to the new signs. Almost 80 streets in Clarington have been graced with the new signs and there arc more than 25 veterans' names reserved for new subdivision streets. In addition, addition, 200 veterans' names arc being kept for future Clarington roads and streets. Since 1989, Clarington has had a policy of naming streets alter residents who died during military service. In 1997 the honour honour was extended to veterans who were residents of Clarington Clarington at the time they were enlisted enlisted with Canada's military forces overseas. "By adding the poppy image to those streets named after veterans, veterans, we hope everyone will have a better sense of the history history and recognize the contribution contribution of those who fought for the freedom we now enjoy," said Mayor John Mutton. John Greenfield of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 178 in Bowmanvillc has been working with municipal staff to identify those who should be honoured with the street names. "Naming streets after veter ans helps to remind us of the sacrifices they made for us so we could live and that they would not be forgotten," said Mr. Greenfield. Edward Pethick is the earliest earliest volunteer to be honoured. He was a veteran of the Peninsular Peninsular War against Napoleon between between 1808 and 1814. He died in Bowmanvillc on Nov. 11, 1853. The most recent person added to the list was Adriaan Arie Bons, who participated in a Canadian peacekeeping mission mission in Gaza in the 1960s. The men and women honoured honoured must have served overseas overseas in wartime during conflicts such as the Crimean War, the Boer War, the First and Second World wars, the Korean War or any conflict since.
