'Strong leadership' key for St. Stephen's at OFSAA BY BRAD KELLY Staff Writer DURHAM - A couple of familiar foes will be in search of a provincial championship this week at the OFSAA Girls A/AA Hockey Championships Championships in Peterborough. Bowmanvillc St. Stephen's and Uxbridge, who met in the LOSSA final Feb. 28, will begin their quest for an Ontario title Thursday when the 16- team, two-day tournament kicks off. The 16 teams have been divided into four pools, with four teams in each pool. Teams will play three round robin games, with the first place team from each of the four pools advancing to Friday's semifinals. The winners will advance to the gold medal game Friday afternoon at 4:30 p.m., preceded preceded by the bronze medal game at 3:30 p.m. St. Stephen's is grouped together with Centre Wellington, Stralhroy and Georgian Bay in Pool C, while Uxbridge has been placed with Sydenham, Sydenham, Adam Scott and Manitoulin in Pool B. "We hope to win our pool," says St. Stephen's coach Lisa Cole of her team's expectations, adding she will be relying on the "strong leadership" of her senior players. St. Stephen's .opens Thursday morning against Centre Wellington, followed by an afternoon game against Georgian Bay. They will close out the round robin against Strathroy on Friday morning. Uxbridge will face Sydenham and Manitoulin on Thursday, closing out the round robin against Adam Scott on Friday morning. Their intentions don't differ from those at St. Stephen's. "Our goal is to win, but we're just happy to go and live the experience," says coach Chris McKee. McKee feels the fact that Uxbridge hasn't met any of the opponents previously previously this season will work to his team's advantage. "We have no preconceived notions and can just go in there and play our game," which includes "solid defence" defence" and relying on "key offensive players," he adds. St. Stephen's and Uxbridge earned a berth at provincials after advancing through to the LOSSA finals. St. Stephen's won the game, blanking Uxbridge 3-0. In four playoff games, St. Stephen's dominated, outscoring its opposition 17-0. "Our girls arc still disappointed they didn't win LOSSA. They would love to play (St. Stephen's) again," says McKee. Despite' the long layoff since winning winning LOSSA (Feb. 28), Cole doesn't expect a sluggish performance by her team at OFSAA. "Fortunately the girls have been playing with their rep teams," to keep sharp. McKee has some team building events planned once the team arrives in Peterborough to help overcome the long layoff. Now the team of 10- and 11-year- olds hopes to write the final chapter on home ice Saturday afternoon. After winning the opening two games of the best-of-fivé series against Embro (near Woodstock), Newcastle can close out the series with a win in Game 3 on Saturday at 4 p.m. at Newcastle Memorial Arena. Newcastle established control of the series in Game 1, posting a 4-1 victory. In Game 2 in Embro, Brett Cairns scored the winner with 1:34 remaining remaining in regulation time to give Newcastle a 4-3 win. "(Embro) are a hard working team.
