WIHTBY - Someone gave him the handle 'Iron* Mike Keenan, but lie's not always the steely-eyed individual you sec guiding a National Hockey League team. The sold out crowd on hand for the 2002 Whitby Sports Hall of Fame induction induction gala saw the softer side of one of the winningest coaches in NHL history history Saturday at the Hcydenshorc Pavilion. Pavilion. Keenan, along with 1946 Ontario champion Whitby Red Wings Junior C hockey club and veteran hockey and lacrosse official Gerry Ravary were formally formally inducted into the Whitby sports shrine. Keenan, who grew up in Whitby, gave an emotional thank you to the community, especially past teachers and sports volunteers, he said "impacted my life forever." After moving to Whitby from Bow- manvillc when he was four, Keenan grew up on High Street, attending St. John the Evangelist Catholic School and Dennis O'Connor High School. It was in that environment in central Whitby that Keenan said he acquired the necessary necessary skills to not only survive, but thrive, at hockey's highest level. The 52-year-old Keenan credited teachers at those schools with helping him learn "life skills, life skills that become become a very important part of your future future direction. "People that impact your life, you never forget them and this community you never forget and what it's meant to you," said Keenan, who went on to mention mention past teachers like Tom Fitzsimmons, Fitzsimmons, coaches like Doug Williams and his uncle Bob Keenan, and friends like David and Mike Sorichetti. "I've had so many great successes and opportunities, but I was grounded here in Whitby and learned the values that l impart and try to impart (on others)," others)," Keenan says. Fifth on the NHL's all-time coaching list in both games (1,069) and wins (539), Keenan is currently the bench boss of the Florida Panthers, who hired him on Dec. 3, 2001. Keenan has also coached in Philadelphia, Chicago, New York, St. Louis, Vancouver and Boston, guiding the Rangers to the Stanley Cup in 1994, the team's first triumph in 54 years. "We all should be very proud of the fact we are from Whitby," Keenan concluded. concluded. Ravary, 70, a long-time pillar of Whitby's lacrosse, hockey and volun teer communities, remains involved in lacrosse as president of the Brooklin Merchants senior lacrosse club. In lacrosse, lie officiated from 1954 to 1976 at every level, including Mann, Minto, Founders and Presidents cups. He also handled games in the first professional professional lacrosse league that operated in the early 1970s. Ravary also kept his whistle busy during the winter months, officiating hockey, including a seven-year stint as referec-in-chief of the Whitby Minor Hockey Association. "It is truly a privilege to be recognized recognized for something I've enjoyed doing," said Ravaiy. "I want to take you back 56 years to a town of 4,500 people," Forbes McEwen of the Red Wings told the crowd. "They had just endured 10 years of depression... and six years of war, where 31 boys made the ultimate sacrifice. "The municipality was in the mood for a home-grown accomplishment," recalled recalled McEwen. "Along came seven boys from Whitby and seven from the outlying municipalities. We played on natural ice in the old arena on Gilbert St. and believe it or not, we'd attract 1,500 people. The Red Wings did not have any stars, but we did not have a weak link and the camaraderie we developed in 1945-46 has lasted us a lifetime." McEwen said the team's members will always cherish the reception the club received when they returned from winning the championship in Port Col- bome.
