They feel they got the right player to address their shortfalls in Bryan Bickell. The 16-year-old is off to the nation's capital after being taken in the second round, 36th overall, in Saturday's Saturday's Ontario Hockey League draft. "Our scouts were unanimous" unanimous" in wanting to make Bickell a part of the storied Ottawa franchise, says coach and general manager Brian Kilrea. "He's a big strong kid who works hard and that's an area we want to improve in. We want to get stronger on the wing and he is a perfect perfect fit." Clarington had two other players drafted into the OHL. Forward Jason Speight was taken in the lltli round, 216th overall, by the Erie Otters while Steve Cornclissen, a defenceman, defenceman, was grabbed by Kitchener in the 14th round, 272nd overall. Bickell was impressive at the OHL Bantam Cup tournament in Brantford, scoring the winning goal in the provincial championship championship game to lift his Toronto Red Wings team to a 5-3 victory over the Oakville Rangers. The tournament, which included included the best bantam teams in the province, was a haven for junior scouts. Aside from scoring the winning goal in the final game, Bickell had 5-2-7 totals totals in eight games during the tournament. Those stats, coupled with his six- foot-three, 200-pound frame, were an attractive package that Ottawa couldn't couldn't pass up. Following along while the draft was being conducted conducted on the Internet, Bickell was pleased to see his name pop up early, and to Ottawa. "They have a good team and coach, and it's a big Strong contingent of local players selected DURHAM - A large contingent contingent of homegrown talent was selected in Saturday's Ontario Hockey League draft, including five in the first three rounds. In total, 14 players from Oshawa, Whitby and Clarington Clarington had their names pop up on the computer screen during the draft, held exclusively exclusively via the Internet. The parade began early with the Oshawa Generals plucking hometown product Adam Berli in the first round, sixth overall. In the second round, the Sarnia Sting grabbed centre- man Michael Haley 29th overall, who played for the Oshawa Kiwanis midgets this past season. He was followed followed by Orono's Bryan Bickell, taken 36th overall by the Ottawa 67's. Bickell, a left-winger, was a member of the OHL Bantam Cup winning Toronto Red Wings. The Generals j limped back into the local talent pool in the third round taking Oshawa's Michael McLean with the 41st pick. Prior to the draft, the Grade 10 student at Clarke High School said a half- dozen teams had shown interest interest in him, but surprisingly, surprisingly, Ottawa wasn't one of the teams. "I didn't care who picked me." he says, noting it would have been "nice to stay closer to home" but in the end it didn't matter. Because be was selected within the first two rounds, Bickell is eligible to play for the team next season, something something Kilrea is counting on. "We fully expect him to make our lineup," says Kilrea, Kilrea, adding the expectations aren't for rookies to "jump in an excel right away. We want the rookies to adjust and get some experience. But after Christmas, we want rookies to play like a veteran in the second half of the season." A pair of players with the Clarington Toros major bantam bantam AAA team were pleased and relieved to sec their names pop up on the computer screen during the draft. Speight, a Grade 10 student student at Courtice Secondary School, was surprised to be selected by Eric, noting Owen Sound has shown the most interest in obtaining. him through the draft. While he is looking forward forward to attending Eric's training camp in the fall, Speight anticipates playing with the Bowmanvillc Eagles Eagles next season. Cornclissen, who may also be destined for the Eagles, Eagles, wanted to get drafted by Kitchener because of the close proximity to universities universities in the area. He also attends attends Grade 10 at Courtice.
