Veteran Dan Caird and rookie Matt Caruana topped the award winners with three each while team captain Jon Ross was close behind with two. In his second season with the hockey club, Caird was selected as the team's most improved player, most underrated and best defensive defensive player. If there were another category for "unsung hero" he would have won.that too said coach Curtis Hodgins. "He was our unsung hero for two years in a row," said Hodgins. "You look at the stats and he's at the bottom, but he comes to play every night." Caird, who had 7-5-12 ukytptalsiiu d-3 games,,played a ipValuablé pale jailing penalties penalties and blocking shots this season while often being matched against the other team's top line. Often kidded kidded for his lack of touch around the net, Caird failed to register a goal in 42 games as a rookie in 2000- 2001. "I would have liked to win the scoring title as well, but you can't win them all," he quipped while addressing addressing those in attendance. Caruana was named the team's top rookie, most sportsmanlike and playoff MVP for the past season. Despite the hefty contribution contribution to the Eagles in his first season, Caruana was passed over in the Ontario Hockey League draft the past two years, something Hodgins feels was unjust. "You look out there and (Caruana) is better than 75 per cent of the kids who were drafted," said Hodgins. Hodgins. "He was fantastic for us from day one." Ross walked away with the scoring title, posting 28- 33-61 totals in 44 games, besting Caruana who finished finished second in team scoring scoring with 47 points. Fittingly, Fittingly, the MVP trophy also. went to Ross. Other award winners on the night included Sean Brackin for loyalty and leadership, Nick Stacey as fan favourite, Ryan Chamberlain Chamberlain as most dedicated . and Andrew Beck as best defenceman. THE SCOOP-In an interesting interesting exchange, Clar- ington Mayor John Mut ton promised the organization that he would personally pave the way for the fire trucks to ride the team through town should it bring a league championship championship to Bowmanville during his tenure. The offer prompted team president president Terry Lynch to assure the mayor those trucks will be needed three times in the next five years. A tall order considering the Eagles haven't got past the first round of playoffs since the team joined the Ontario Provincial Junior League in 1995, a run of seven consecutive seasons...Former captain Kyle Crouch, traded at the January deadline deadline to Aurora, attended the banquet, as did goaltender Joel Whitmarsh, who joined the Sudbury Wolves of the OHL midway through the season.
