THE CANADIAN STATESMAN, MAY 15, 2002 PAGE 3 r: OPG, Courtice Secondary make partnership work Nine-year . relationship results in national award BY CRYSTAL CR1M1 Staff Writer CLARINGTON - Ontario Power Generation and Courtice Secondary School, which have long had a close relationship, have been honoured for their work together. On Monday, community leaders joined to celebrate the nine-year partnership between OPG and Cour- ticc Secondary School. The relationship relationship was chosen as one of five national national winners for Partners in Education Education from the Conference Board of Canada. "1 have a lot of opinions on what is unique and successful," said Bruce Balsdon, technology head for Courtice Secondary School. "A lot (of partnerships) arc money-oriented, money-oriented, but this is a lot more where students students work with people from hydro. I think hydro tries to give to the community and the kids are giving to the community too." Students have worked on a number number of assignments with OPG, both annual and opportunity projects. Ventures include technical, science, and environmental with mentoring and financial support from OPG. Courtice Secondary School has built robots and electrical vehicles, which have won several provincial and national competitions. Students also work on and maintain an 830- acre wildlife area and 7.5-km section section of the waterfront trail, winning awards from conservation and environmental environmental organizations. The annual 'Friends of a Feather' program gets . high schoolers and OPG staff working working with surrounding elementary „ schools to build and install nesting » boxes along the waterfront trail for birds and bats. "It's a great learning opportunity," opportunity," said Grade 11 student, Jon Thompson. "If you want to get involved involved and be a teacher and know learned much through the various OPG partnership programs he has been involved with and encourages other businesses to become partners in education." For some students, the program has had a direct impact on their future, future, such as T.J. Repath. From 1993-'97, he was involved in the robotic program partnered by OPG. Now 23, Mr. Repath studies Aerospace Engineering in university. "It was my first real experience designing designing and testing a robot. It was very important to my choice in entering entering engineering," said Mr. Repath. "Without the sponsorship of OPG, the robotic competition wouldn't have gone nearly as far as it did. They gave us mentoring, financial support and use of the facilities at times." But the partnership isn't just to benefit students, said Don Terry, communications communications specialist with Darlington Darlington Nuclear. He said the ventures help get OPG into the community, give employees and the company satisfaction satisfaction because they get to mentor students, students, and could also persuade students students to follow a career in science and technology, attracting them as future employees. "This year when we built the sugar shack I learned a lot about framing which I want to go into so I learned a lot from that project." Additional water supply plant capacity is required in order to meet future demands in the Newcastle Urban Area. Alternative solutions for providing additional water supply plant capacity will be analyzed and evaluated based on the following: • Engineering and Public Safety • Social Environment • Cultural Environment • Natural Environment • Economic Environment This project is being undertaken in accordance with the procedures set out in the Municipal Class Environmental Assessment, June 2000. The Municipal Class EA applies to municipal infrastructure projects including roads, water and wastewater projects. This project is designated as a Schedule "C" undertaking, at this time, under the Environmental Assessment Act. Schedule "C" projects are those that generally include the construction of new facilities and major expansions to existing facilities. An Environmental Study Report will be filed for public review at the completion of this project. Public and agency consultation is a crucial component of the Class EA process. Throughout this study we will be seeking input from the public and various agencies. A Public Information Centre (PIC) will be held. Further information on this PIC will be provided shortly.
