On July 1, Philip McAlister, from St. Stephen's Secondary School in Bowmanville, begins his new position position as representative of students Across the Peterborough Victoria Northumberland and Clarington Catholic District School Board (PVNC). j "Any and all (student) questions jvill be answered," Mr. McAlister pledges. After two years on his school's student council, Mr. McAlister decided decided it was time to move on. Even though he admits the student trustee position looks like a lot of work, he decided it would be worthwhile. Along with his political experience, the 18-year-old also enjoys music programs and volunteering in religion religion class. An OAC student, Mr. McAlister was chosen for the role by current trustee Adrienne Silnicki, also from St. Stephen's, and student liaisons from the four other secondary schools in PVNC. Three people applied applied for the position. "All of them were qualified," says Ms. Silnicki. "I can't speak on behalf behalf of the liaisons, but I think Philip has a heart for the students. 1-Ie was there to voice student concerns and be there for the students. I think that's the key to being student trustee: you can't be selfish." While the board previously had its Five schools take turns choosing a trustee, the policy was changed to allow all students a shot at the position position every year. Those running for the position are chosen by their school and anyone not elected becomes becomes a liaison. Some students choose to be a liaison only.
