More specifically, bowing out to the Barrie Tornado in the opening round of last year's Ontario Lacrosse Association Jr. B playoffs. Well, that upset can officially be put . in the past because the future has arrived. arrived. After squeaking past the Mimico Mountaineers 6-5 in the fifth and deciding deciding game of their opening round series Saturday night, the Green Gaels have the matchup they have desired since last year's early exit. The Green Gaels and Barrie kicked off a much-anticipated best-of-five series series last night (Tuesday, after our deadline) deadline) at the Garnet B. Rickard Recreation Recreation Complex. Game 2 of the series shifts to Barrie Thursday night, with Game 3 in Bow- manville Sunday at 2 p.m. If needed, Game 4 is in Barrie Tuesday, July 23, with the deciding game in Bowmanville Thursday, July 25 at 8 p.m. The Green Gaels (16-5-1) finished four points ahead of second place Barrie (14-7-1) in the standings, the difference a result of the two head-to-head games during the regular season. The Green Gaels won both outings, 8-4 and 16-3. "It's going to be a rough series," predicted predicted Luey. "(Barrie) like to play a rough style, and we need to play smart. We have to play the way we did in the last game of the regular season (in a 16-3 win over Barrie), but we can't let that go to our heads. "There won't be any 16-3 games in this series." Bairic advanced to the quarterfinals by sweeping Scarborough in three straight games, 11-7, 15-14 (20T) and 20-9. The Green Gaels came perilously close to not getting past the opening round of playoffs for the second straight year, stretched to the limit by fourth place Mimico. In the five games, the largest margin of victory was two goals, with the Green Gaels outscoring Mimico Mimico 36-35. Home floor advantage proved to be the difference, with the Green Gaels closing it out on their home floor Saturday Saturday night, 6-5. Tyler Harris scored twice, with one each to Josh Colley, James Hinkson, Daiyl Jackson and Nate Andres. Sommer West makes national fastball team BOWMANVILLE - Sommer West of Bowmanville will again wear Canada's colours at a major fastball competition. West, who flayed for Canada at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Australia, Australia, was one of 17 named to the national national squad travelling to Saskatoon for the Women's World ISE Softball Championships from July 26 to Aug, 4. The final selections were made 'following the U.S. Cup in Honolulu earlier this month and the team is currently currently competing at the Canada Cup in Surrey, B.C.
