THE CANADIAN STATESMAN, AUGUST 7,2002 PAGE 3 Police association elects new president I DURHAM - Doug Cavanaugh, a I. longtime Oshawa patrol constable, I called "bittersweet" his election to ■ president of the Durham Regional i Police Association, the seat left va- -cant by the sudden death of his . friend and mentor. The 45-ycar-old veteran officer, vice president of the association ■since 1997, took over as interim •president after Terry Ryan, the pop- 'ular police leader, was killed in a head-on motor vehicle collision May 30 in north Whitby. A man has been charged with impaired impaired driving causing his death. Mr. Cavanaugh was voted president president for the remainder of Mr. Ryan's term, which runs through 2003, after an election was held last week by the association, representing representing 945 police and civilian members. members. There was one other candidate, candidate, Constable Jerry Trirnrn. Mr. Cavanaugh, to be sworn in during an association board meeting today, called the victory bittersweet given the tragic circumstances. He said Mr. Ryan was an irreplaceable leader whose "shoes will never be filled." Mr. Cavanaugh joined the force in April 1978 and has spent his entire entire police career as a patrol officer working in 17 Division in Oshawa. The top issue on the agenda, he said, will be preparing the association association for contract talks. The current collective agreement expires at the end of 2003. "I have enjoyed working with Doug over the past several years in his former capacity as vice president president (of the association)," said Durham Chief Kevin McAlpine, "and 1 know he will continue to be an aggressive, strong voice for our officers." DOUG CAVANAUGH Aircraft mishap leaves no one injured OSHAWA - While teaching one of his students late Monday afternoon, driving instructor Dave Demarinis witnessed a crash - from the air. "It was 10 minutes to 6 (p.m.) Monday (Aug. 5) and by sheer luck I was looking up. The plane was (flying) (flying) level, about 20 feet above the ground," says Mr. Demarinis. "It looked like it had snapped a cable." What the Oshawa man saw was a Piper Cherokee 180 plane experiencing experiencing problems with its nose gear as it landed at Oshawa Airport. The pilot and two passengers escaped injury when the aircraft's nose gear collapsed collapsed upon landing at the municipal airport. "The plane had a problem with the nose gear," confirms Ted Goodchild, development and planning services commissioner for the City. "It turned out not to be a big deal. There were no injuries. Mr. Demarinis described the small plane as "going up and down and ■zigzagging" before what aviators [dryly call a 'heavy landing.' : "The nose went into the ground," ■he adds.
