JAMES BARTON: Scored 35 goals for the Gaels in league action. RICK PASSFIELD: Carrying the load in goal for Gaels. JAMES HINKSON: Notched 57 points during the regular season. SHANE SARGENT: Scored 30 goals during league play. TYLER HARRIS: Put 28-40-68 numbers during season. Gaels hope numbers add up to Cup triumph Clarington starts quest for national lacrosse championship BY BRAD KELLY Staff Writer BOWMANVILLE - If the Clarington Green Gaels are at all superstitious, their chances of winning the Founder's Cup Canadian lacrosse championship championship are slightly higher than the other eight teams. The theory is based around the number five. In three game-five situations situations during the Ontario Lacrosse Association playoffs, the Green Gaels emerged as winners on êach occasion. Ironically, five is also a magic number ■ at the Founder's. To get their hands on the Cup, a team will have to be successful in five games, in, get this, five days. Could there by a more perfect perfect match? The best Jr. B lacrosse teams in the country begin their quest for a national championship beginning today (Wednesday) as round robin games get under way in Halton Hills. Games continue Thursday and Friday, with semifinals Saturday and the medal round Sunday. "I imagine we'll battle hard. We've pulled it out somehow this year by making great decisions down the stretch," says coach Brad MacArthur of his team's chances. "When it comes down to that one game, you can't afford afford to make a bad decision." ■ The Green Gaels play consecutive consecutive games at 4 p.m. over the next three days, opening against the New Westminster Salmonbellies, followed by tilts against the Edmonton Miners and Winnipeg Falcons on Thursday and Friday respectively. respectively. On the other side of the ledger, the host Halton Hills Bulldogs lead a division including including Ontario champion St. Catharines Spartan, Bedford Crossefire (Nova Scotia), Saskatchewan Wheat Kings and Calgary Mountaineers. The top two teams from each division advance to Saturday's Saturday's playoff round. The fact the Green Gaels were swept in the Ontario finals finals by Spartan will have little bearing on their performance at the Founder's, says MacArthur. "It's so hard with these kids. They played 15 games (before the final) and won every game five they played. "They are so refreshed to be in the Founder's Cup. That's what. was on their minds." He adds that a full week of practise prior to today's open ing game will pay huge dividends. dividends. "It seems every time we practise after playing a stretch of games poorly, we come back on fire." On the experience front, the Green Gaels have three players who have been fitted with Founder's Cup championship championship rings. Josh Colley won one with the Green Gaels in 2000, while Doug Trudeau and Marvin Marvin Barr won the top prize in Jr. B lacrosse last year with Wallaceburg. The Green Gaels will also have to rely on contributions from regular season scoring leaders Tyler Harris (28-40- 68), Shane Sargent (30-31- 61), James Barton (35-24-59) and James Hinkson (19-38- 57) to be successful. Goaltending will also be a key, as Rick Passfield will carry much of the load, backed by Kurtis Wagar. The defence will get a boost as captain Scott Theis is expected to return after a lengthy absence due to a knee injury. In all, the next five days will be a gruelling, but worthwhile worthwhile experience, if the Green Gaels reach the final and bring home a championship. "You're going to be sore, but in the end if you get a (championship) ring, it will be worth paying the price," notes MacArthur. Redmen trail Excelsiors entering Game 4 BRAMPTON - The Brooklin Redmen have figured figured out how to score on the Brampton Excelsiors; now they'll have to find a way to win on the road. After evening their best-of- seven Ontario Lacrosse Association Association Major Series final with a 16-12 win in Whitby Sunday, Sunday, the Redmen fell behind 2-1 with a 15-9 loss Monday in Brampton, where they were stunned 7-2 in the opener. Game 4 goes tonight at the Iroquois Park Sports Centre beginning at 8 p.m., Game 5 is in Brampton Thursday at 8 p.m. and, if needed, Game 6 in Whitby Saturday at 7 p.m. A possible seventh game is tentatively scheduled for Monday in Brampton at 8 p.m. Shawn Williams and Cory Bomberry sparked the Redmen Redmen attack Sunday with three goals and three assists each while Jason Crosbie and Pat McCready scored twice apiece. Nick Trudeau, Bomberry and Rosyski tallied twice each and Williams had four assists in Monday's loss. Other Brooklin scorers were Jason Crosbie, Darryl Gibson and Marty O'Brien. Major Series scoring leader Josh Sanderson had five goals and seven assists over the two games for Brampton. With the Excelsiors holding holding home floor advantage, the Redmen will have to steal at ' least one game in Brampton in order to prevail in the series and host the Mann Cup na-. tional championship.
