But Gillespie himself has little interest in looking down the road right now. The 24-year-old Oshawa golf phenom is still reeling from this weekend's heartbreaking second place finish at the Canadian Tour's Greater Toronto Open, where he let a two-shot lead slip away on the final hole before losing out to American Chris Locker in the first playoff hole. . Gillespie, who carried ' a four- stroke lead into Sunday's final round, told the media afterward, "This is probably the most disap pointing moment I've ever had in golf." A day later, he still wasn't ready to consider the encouraging ramifications ramifications of a season in which he finished finished third in the Tour's Order of Merit with $73,869. "I don't think I've actually thought of that," Gillespie says of a terrific second season on the Tour. "It was a good year, yeah, but second second place is disappointing when you've led all freakin' weekend." All the more disappointing considering considering it cost him an exemption for the nerve-wracking first round of PGA qualifying in October. The golf gods seemed to be on side with Gillespie, who needed to win the tournament and have Jeff Quinney miss the cut in order to grab one of two such exemptions. Quinney co-operated, but Gillespie's Gillespie's second place prize of $ 14,400 left him nearly $10,000 shy. "It was my mistake on the last (regulation) hole," says Gillespie, who hit the \ rough twice before missing a sevfen-foot par putt and carding his only six of the tournament. tournament. "I screwed up." Quinney, meantime, drained an HOT SUMMER NIGHTS BENEFIT CONCERTS YOU'RE INVITED TO HELP SUPPORT SIMCOE HALL SETTLEMENT HOUSE BOYS & GIRLS CLUB TICKETS: $25 ADVANCE $30 AT THE DOOR AVAILABLE NOW1 UNPLUGGED & INTERACTIVE CDN. Gillespie's rounds of 65-68-66- 71 left him 14-under par for the tournament and gave him his fourth top-10 result of the season. Following up on a 2001 season in which he was named rookie of the year, Gillespie missed only two cuts in 16 events - the first two of the season - and claimed his first Tout- victory when he won the Myrtle Beach Barefoot Classic. By finishing as the top Canadian on the Tour, Gillespie has earned exemptions into a pair of upcoming PGA events on home soil, the Air Canada Championship in B.C.
