/ l THE CANADIAN STATESMAN, AUGUST 28,2002 PAGE 17 Baker quickly trades lacrosse stick for hockey skates Shortly after winning the Founders Cup, Colin Baker was off to the Sarnia Sting's training camp BY BRAD KELLY Staff Writer SOLINA - In the matter of just a couple of hours, Colin Baker had to transform his mindset from the lacrosse floor to the hockey rink. Baker, and his Clarington Green Gaels teammates captured captured the Founder's Cup Jr. B Canadian championship in a thrilling finale Sunday in Ballon Ballon Hills. Immediately following the game, Baker left for Sarnia where he will compete for a place on the roster of the Sting during the training camp for the Ontario Hockey League team. Despite the conflict in the overlapping events in his sporting sporting life, Baker arranged it to ensure he didn't have to miss either one. "I talked to Sarnia before I even made the Gaels and said if we went to the Founder's Cup it was the same week as training camp," said the Solina resident prior to the Founder's Cup. "I won't be (in Sarnia) for registration, but l will be there for all the games and practices." practices." The 17-year-old was selected selected in the 15th and final round by Sarnia at the 2001 OHL draft and was held off the scoreshect in live appearances with the Sting last season. His main responsibility on the ice was wifi: the Provincial Junior League Bowmanville Eagles, finishing third in team scoring with 24-18-42 totals in 48 games. A veteran of two seasons with the Eagles, Baker became a rookie again in his home community with the Green Gaels, posting 7-10-17 totals in 18 games this summer. While it was a unique op portunity to play two different sports at a high level in the same community, there was a different feeling in the dressing room of the Green Gaels com- • pared to the one down the hall that the Eagles occupy. "There's a little bit more team spirit here than with the Eagles and I think that's what has taken us this far," he says of winning three playoff rounds in the fifth and deciding game of each series. He was particularly proud of the team's "effort against Onondaga in the semifinals. After losing the opening two games of the best-of-five series, the Gaels stormed back with three straight wins to advance. "We all have heart. Against Onondaga we had three games left and we had to win them and we came out in full flight." That desperate feeling was certainly lacking in the league finals against St. Catharines Spartan where the Green Gaels were swept in three straight games. But reaching the finals was enough for both teams to be granted a spot in the Founder's Cup. While qualifying for the Founder's Cup is certainly a highlight this season, Baker got the lowlight out of the way early. Rookies are often open to their share of kidding and ridicule, and Baker managed to give his teammates ample ammunition ammunition in a game against Scarborough in May. Racing the length of the floor on a breakaway with the score 7-6 in favour of the Green Gaels and the Scarborough goalie on the bench in the final minute, an empty net was there to greet him. Rolling a shot toward the open net, he watched in disbelief disbelief as the ball caromed off the post, giving Scarborough one final chance to tie the game. Luckily, Scarborough didn't score, and everybody laughed about the botched empty-net play afterward. "I took a lot of kidding from everybody. My family, my teammates, everybody," he says, quickly pointing out that in the same instance in the playoffs against Barrie, he scored into an empty net to seal a win. Baker is hoping fans remember remember the one he got, not the one that got away.
