Bowmanville Foundry mementoes wanted for 100th anniversary book CLARINGTON - For 100 years the Bowmanville Foundry has stood its ground and historians are looking looking for help to tell its tale. Helen Schmid and Helen Bajorek MacDonald are working on a book about the Bowmanville Foundry and there's no room for hearsay. They are asking to have or borrow anything anything pertaining to the history of the foundry, such as pay stubs, newspaper newspaper articles, advertisements, invoices, invoices, and photographs. "The foundry has been in the community for 100 years, there's a lot of history there," said Ms. MacDonald, MacDonald, teacher and local writer. Ms. Schmid, a well-known local historian, asked Ms. MacDonald to help with the project. "Even if anyone anyone has anything relating to teams sponsored by the foundry. The real There'll be some new faces at the head of the class BY CRYSTAL CRIMI Staff Writer CLARINGTON - Students in the area are going to see a lot of new faces when they hit the books this September. September. Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board has hired 40 elementary and seven secondary school teachers for the Clarington area, more than any other part of the board. Those numbers do not include teachers who have transferred from other KPR schools. "We end up with a lot of young teachers who are full of enthusiasm and a lot of young new teachers do extra curricular...fresh blood is a good thing," said Sylvia Terpstra, superintendent superintendent for Clarington schools. "We often get the young teachers, train them and they go off to other parts of the board. There also may be more teachers in schools coming from other parts of the board." Many teachers want to work closer to where they live or just want a change, added Ms. Terpstra. Benefits come with both new and more experienced experienced teachers. People from each walk of life have something they bring with them, she added. Retirements and an increasing population population are responsible for the additional additional growth, not to mention a new school, Dr. G.J. MacGillivray in Cour- tice, opening this fall. "It is quite normal," said Ms. Terpstra Terpstra of the number of brand new teachers teachers coming to Clarington. "Ours is the area we are getting the majority of the changes because we have more openings. openings. We're growing and in other areas there's decline. It's constant and will continue to be that way." Some schools will see more new faces this year than others. "Lord Elgin, they had a lot of new teachers and Central Public School in Bowmanville, those are two schools which have had a lot of changes," explained explained Ms. Terpstra. "A lot of it is movement." There will likely be a new teacher at every public school in Clarington, she said. Warrant issued for break-in suspect COURTTCE - An arrest warrant has been issued by police for a second man after a police chase of two suspects suspects in a recent break-and-enter spree. Durham Regional Police pursued a stolen Dodge Shadow last Wednesday Wednesday after a break-in on Courticc Road. The car rammed a police cruiser and was chased west on Taunton Road to Oshawa where it lost control and hit a parked vehicle and tree, police said. Daniel Franklin Carr, 23, of no fixed address, was arrested at the scene and charged in connection with 18 commercial and residential burglaries burglaries in Oshawa, Whitby, Clarington and north Durham, police said. A second suspect, who fled the crash on foot and escaped, has been identified by police as Jonathan Hniard, IV, of no fixed address. A warrant has been issued for Mr. Emard, who laces more than 40 criminal criminal charges including 20 counts of break-and-enter, 16 counts of possession possession of stolen properly, 'and flight from police and dangerous driving. tragedy is in the 1960s there was a big fire so it's hard to get anything that predates the fire" Once the items are received, they will either be copied and used for the book, or put in the Bowmanville museum for a display near the end of the year. "What draws me to the project is the sense of the labour history. It's nice to chart stuff, especially while people are still alive," Ms. MacDonald MacDonald said. "It's really interesting to see what people were making. These things tell us a lot about of history of what labour was like and how many hours you could work." Although neighbouring foundries such as the Ontario Malleable Iron. Co., and Fittings Ltd. in Oshawa both went under, the Bowmanville Foundry was able to remain. "To survive in Bowmanville, a lot of foundries folded in the late 1980s. (The Bowmanville Foundry) has always hired locally. There has been people working there for 30, 40, 50 years, they have huge employee employee loyalty." The Reluier family ran the foundry for many years until it was sold in the 1980s. Current owner, Michael Patrick, requested the book be created for the 100th anniversary. "I really just want to stress that it's an important part of our community," community," said Ms. MacDonald. "The only way to acquire documentation of anything is through artifacts. We want everything accurate for the book. We don't want to hearsay anything."
