I PAGE 16THE CANADIAN STATESMAN, SEPTEMBER 25,2002 Playoff needed to decide Canadian Tour cards BY BRAD KELLY Staff Writer ASIIBURN - After playing 90 holes of golf over a gruelling five days, teeing it up for one extra hole to earn a professional card for the Canadian Tour didn't pose a problem problem for Kevin Jones. The former Oshaxva resident calmly strode to the first, tee Friday afternoon at Royal Ashburn Golf Course for an eight-way playoff, and promptly birdied the hole to gain one of 15 coveted spots for full exempt status on the 2003 tour. "My main goal was to get one of the 15 spots," said Jones of his mindset heading into the eight-player eight-player playoff. The 15 lowest total scores over the five-day qualifying school earned full exemptions, while the next I0 plus ties received conditional conditional playing privileges for next year. Jones was one of three players to birdie the first extra hole, securing full playing privileges for next year. The remaining five in the playoff were granted conditional cards along with seven others. Standing on the first tee for the playoff, Jones zeroed in on what he had to do, eliminating the other seven from the equation. "You can't look at what the other guys are doing. You just have to play the course. My focus was trying to make birdie on the first hole. "Your .heart and determination get you through it. When you know you've come this far, one more hole or however many holes, you're willing willing to do it." Jones started Friday two shots back of 15th place, but the 30-year- old O'Neill Collegiate graduate fired a twounder-par final round 70 for a five-day total of 364 (77-72- 71 -74-70) to get into the playoff. He was four over par for the week. The Wright State University 1 (Ohio). gràçiuqtÇrihas, toiled on the y Lonestar/GoldèhVBcar and Hooters mini tours in the United States the past three years. He hopes the Canadian Canadian Tour is a springboard to something something bigger. "I believe in dreams and I think you have to go for it. Ultimately I have the highest dream' of playing on the big (PQA) tour. But nobody knows their full potential. You never know, so why not try it?" said Jones, who has been working as a teaching pro in Dayton, Ohio. Jones was one of three Durham players who teed it up among 110 entries for the fall qualifying school. After four rounds played Monday to Thursday, the 60 lowest scores and ties advanced to Friday's final round. Brian Wilkins of Courtice advanced advanced through to the final round after scores of 72-73-75-81. He fired a 78 Friday for a 379 total, finishing finishing in a tie for 56th overall. Steve Martel, also of Courtice, struggled through four rounds with scores of 82-87-79-80 for a 328 total and didn't advance to Friday's final round. He finished 98th overall. For Wilkins, the pressure of playing playing with so much at stake got the belter of him, as he shot himself out of contention with an 81 in Thursday's Thursday's fourth round. "It caught up to me when I shot 81. The pressure got to me," said the 26-year-okl, who celebrated his birthday last Wednesday on the golf course. "It was my first lime here and realizing realizing what could happen to me in the final two days. It could have been my dream-comc-truc. My caddie caddie tried to keep me in it but the pressure got to me." Obviously disappointed with not obtaining one of the coveted tom- cards, Wilkins said the experience was worthwhile. "It was something I didn't know a lot about. It was stressful playing early in the morning every day. "It was a great experience, but a lot tougher than I expected it to be." As for the immediate future, Wilkins said that "it's a question mark lor a lot of us" aside from the 27 who earned some form of playing playing status, lie has the option of going to qualifying school in Florida Florida this winter, or playing some mini-tours in the summer and returning returning next fall to Royal Ashburn. Securing some sponsorship may dictate what route lie goes. At this lime, trying to qualify for the PGA tour is still a couple of years away, he said. "There's big question marks in my life. I'm just trying to evaluate things."
