ONGLEY, ARCHDEACON F.G. - "Archdeacon Fred" Ongley died peacefully in Comox, BC, surrounded by family members, on April 28, 2002 at the age of 90. He was born in Hamilton, Hamilton, Ont. in 1912, started school in England during WW1 and in Hamilton after 1919, attended attended Trinity College, U of T on a scholarship (1932-38) earning a BA, MA and LTH and was ordained in 1938. He married Frances Brittain of Ottawa in 1940. He was a Chaplain for RCAF during WW11 serving in England and Germany. Returning to Canada, he became became a Canon at St. Matthew's Cathedral in Brandon, Man. He and Frances returned to Ontario with three children to be close to aging aging parents in 1952, settling at St. John's, Peterborough. Fred and Frances Ongley and youngest son George ("Britt") came to St. George's Anglican Church, Oshawa from 1962 until his retirement in 1977. He particularly particularly enjoyed working in the centre of Oshawa and opening up the parish hall to serve the downtown core. He served as Archdeacon of Scarborough, which later became the archdeaconry archdeaconry of Durham (an area from Bay Ridges Ridges to Brighton, North to Uxbridge and Rice Lake). After Retirement, he and Frances moved to their cottage in Buckhorn where they enjoyed Iheir canoe and sailboat in summer and cross-country skiing in winter. When Frances died in Peterborough in 1992, alter being nursed by Fred for a year, the Archdeacon regained his energies at age 80 as honorary assistant at St. John's, Peterborough Peterborough and Priest-in-charge in Lakefield. Archdeacon Archdeacon .Ongley was : ;,yery involved in many boards and comijiittees in Oshawa. His deepest deepest involvement was with the Durham Region Region family and children's services as a board member for 14 years and president for 3 years. Family counselling in the city was instituted instituted during his time on the board. He also served with the Oshawa Red Cross and Ihe local branch of CNIB. He was a charter member member and founder of the Oshawa Church Council Council (later known as Oshawa Ministerial Assoc.) Assoc.) and also one of three presidents of Ihe SahelProject which raised $50,000 from Oshawa for drought-stricken people in that African country. "Archdeacon Fred's" sensitive sensitive pastoral care, community involvement, love of music, inspired preaching and deep compassion for people of all ages and allwalks allwalks of life made him a beloved gentle friend for many citizens ol Oshawa and surrounding surrounding area. He relumed to the region on many occasions to visit friends and lo preach. His last sermon was in May, 2001 when he preached a memorable sermon at the 175th Anniversary of St. John's Church, Peterborough. It was a moving experience for all who heard him. Archdeacon Ongley met by chance his lirst childhood girlfriend, Agnes Copple Simpson in Ottawa in 1994. They married in Nov. 1994 and moved to Comox, BC to be close to family. Once again, he nursed a beloved wife through a long illness. illness. Agnes Ongley died in 2000.
