Volunteer firefighters honoured for years of dedication BY JACQUIE MclNNES Staff Writer NEWCASTLE - It could be the middle of the night after a long day at work or the part where they say 'I do' at your daughter's wedding wedding but if the call comes there's only one thing to do - respond. Fortunately, on an idyllic fall evening as three volunteer firelighters firelighters received their long-term service medals outside the Newcastle Newcastle Fire Hall recently, there were no buzzes or beepers to be heeded. AIF Alldread received his 35- year service medal, Graydon Brown the 30-year sendee medal and Don Holmes his 25-ycar medal for community service provided provided at any time of day or night) whenever the call for help is made. "It's significant to have that many years of volunteering in the community," says Divisional Chief Gord Weir. "That's a lot of interruptions interruptions throughout your life." Mr. Alldread says the chance to be a key part of his community has been his motivation to continue so long. "I've met a lot of people, I've helped a lot of people over the 35 years," says the retired General Motors employee. Perhaps the most exciting lire he recalls was the Newcastle lumberyard lire in 1995, just a stone's throw from the firehouse. There were no injuries in they always serve that early morning blaze but "it took a lot of trucks and a lot of people" people" to get the fire under control and it was six or seven hours before the work was done, he says. Mr. Brown began volunteering 34 years ago and for 32 of those he has been, what is known as a "two- hatter," a full-time firefighter and, in his spare time, a volunteer firefighter. firefighter. He says it's the chance to "stay more involved, more active in the community" that keeps him volunteering even though he is already already working in fire services on a full-time basis. The training the part-timers receive receive has changed a lot in the past 25 years says Mr. Flolmes, who points out the volunteers are trained on par with their full-time counterparts. Although the part-timers do receive receive a stipend for their work, it is quite minimal given the time they put into the training and calls, says Divisional Chief Weir. Mayor John Mutton, who was on hand to present the medals with Regional Councillor Councillor Charlie Trim, agrees. "There is a small stipend but really it is volunteer work when you think about get ting up in the middle of the night. I'm amazed how quickly they can get out to a call. I've seen Don Holmes respond in a tuxedo," he adds. GENERAL FAMILY DENTISTRY EMERGENCY CARE AVAILABLE 0 Sedation 0 Children's Dentistry 0 Periodontist 0.
