PAGE 4 THE CANADIAN STATESMAN, OCTOBER 2, 2002 www.durhamregion.com Everything old is new again Regional ambulance could be used for St.John BY JACQUIE MclNNES Staff Writer DURHAM - Sometimes the best value comes from giving something away. That's the thought of the Regional finance and administration committee, committee, which is recommending a donation donation of a used ambulance to the St. John Ambulance volunteer organization. organization. Recently, the organization wrote requesting the Region donate one of its retired ambulances, scheduled to go up for auction this fall. "I think we should make a special allowance and give some consideration consideration to St. John," suggested Whitby Councillor Gerry Emm, who noted the volunteer organization "helps this community as a whole and saves taxes." Although all committee members were supportive of the idea, some were concerned the donation could set a precedent. Finance Commissioner Commissioner Jim Clapp assured the committee the policy on surplus equipment is open-ended enough to allow council flexibility in these types of decisions. "Generally we go to auction first but knowing we are not going to always always get that much, we look at other ways. Landfilling it costs us," Mr. Clapp said. In previous years, ambulances have fetched anywhere from $1,300 to $10,000 depending on the vehicle with the average falling around $4,500, Mr. Clapp said. St. John is a non-profit organization organization that has been operating in Canada Canada for more than 100 years and has been in service for 900 years in the Commonwealth, making it the oldest health care organization. It sets up mobile first aid posts at many regional regional events and is also considering setting setting up a patient transfer service, free of charge. Some events it attends include include Oshawa Generals' and Legion- aires' games, Fiesta Week and Lake- view Park functions. The recommendation must be approved approved at the next full council meeting meeting on Oct. 2. 1 ■ PRESTIGE LOCATION-FALL BALL "Magic trick, songs and audience participation take the children on an exciting journey to learn that YOU CAN DO IT when you believe in yourself!" -- Saturday >. ^j|.
