Canada's iiooist Defenceman collects four assists in weekend split BY BRAD KELLY Staff Writer BOWMANVILLE - Bow- manville Eagles defenceman Kyle Branson has been described described as a "horse" by coach Curtis Hodgins, and that's meant as a compliment. Based on size, Branson's 5- foot-10, 176-pound frame would suggest that he is more of a quarter horse - small and built for speed. But he plays more like a full-sized thoroughbred with a bit of a nasty disposition. "1 tried to get tougher," says the 17-year-old Whitby resident resident on the aspect of his game he tried to improve on the most oyer last season. ; "Pm not .a big guy, but being one of the only defence- men from the team last year with experience, I tried to bring a more physical game," into his sophomore season, Kyle Branson: Has tried to add 'a more physical' element to his game. "1 hope I can get the younger guys involved with some gritty play." Not only has Branson added a robust style of play, it hasn't come at the expense of his gifted gifted offensive ability. He contributed a pair of assists assists in both weekend games, a 7-2 win in Peterborough Saturday Saturday night and a 4-3 setback Sunday night at home to' Kingston. The four assists bring his season totals to' 2-12-14 through 18 games, a huge improvement improvement on the 2-9-11 totals he posted last season in 45 games as a rookie with the Provincial Junior A Hockey League team. With only five returning players from last year's roster, much more was expected of Branson heading into this season. season. He was also given the added responsibility of a leadership leadership role, named one of the team's two assistant captains. "He's our leader back on the blue-line. He's done everything we've expected and is a terrific kid in the dressing room," said Hodgins. Moving into a leadership role on the hockey club has helped Branson's game more than it has hindered it. "It's a little on my mind, but I don't know that it changes my role," says the Grade 12 student student at Whitby's All Saints Catholic School of being an assistant assistant captain. "I know I have to be a leader because all the young guys are watching and you have to lead Generals in losing slump BY BRIAN McNAIR Staff Writer OSHAWA - The Oshawa Generals have a fairly decent excuse for hitting their first funk of the season. But George Burnett is not a fan of excuses. Playing three road games in four days without two of their top players, the Generals came away with nothing but a three- game losing skid in Ontario Hockey League play. And that's just not acceptable acceptable to Burnett, who watched his team lose 5-0 to the Peterborough Peterborough Petes Thursday, 2-1 to the Belleville Bulls Saturday and 7-2 to the Brampton Battalion Battalion Sunday. "We have guys who are expected expected to score and who didn't get any scoring chances," says Burnett, coach and general manager of the Generals. "This isn't about one person, this is about à whole group of guys who have to play better together." together." Needing the likes of Jamie Johnson, Brandon Nolan, Anthony Anthony Aquino and Colt King to , step up and fill the void, Burnett instead watched those four players players combine for three points - a power-play marker by Nolan from Johnson and Aquino Sunday Sunday - in three games. The Generals also had shaky goaltending, especially on Sunday, Sunday, when Chris Beckford-Tseu coughed up four goals on 14 shots in the first period and Kevin Druce allowed three on seven shots of the third period after turning aside all 14 in the second. While savip^'We didn't get wlMCAfc'i needed ■ them," Burnett added, "T don't think goaltending is an issue. I think it's a little bit of everything." everything." Looking ahead to the future, Branson admits to "just trying to get through this year" with the Eagles before weighing any scholarship options that might be presented, a route he would prefer to travel after graduation. graduation.
