ÎÎ ORDER R2884 NE121A1 C1 BY BRAD KELLY Staff Writer BOWMANVILLE - His size makes him a presence on the ice - now he has to work on becoming a force. That's the objective for Bowmanville Eagles forward forward Erik Petersen as he makes his way through a rookie season in the Provincial Provincial Junior A Hockey League. At 5-foot-10 and 210 pounds, the 18-year-old adds a physical dimension to the hockey club, something he uses to his advantage to create create scoring opportunities for himself and teammates. Sunday afternoon the Whitby resident contributed a pair of goals in .a 7-2 win over the Port Hope Predators, Predators, helping snap a five- game losing streak. He also potted one in Cobourg Monday Monday night as the Eagles and Cougars skated to a 2-2 overtime overtime tie. "I'm getting comfortable and used to the higher level. 1 didn't really expect to score a lot this year," says Petersen, who has 8-7-15 totals through 27 games this season. season. After graduating from the Whitby Wildcats midget AAA team last season, Petersen Petersen used a combination of size and quick hands around the opposing net to impress the coaching staff in training camp. Now he has to distribute distribute some of that quickness to his feet and the way he reads the play, says coach Curtis Hodgins. ' "He's got good hands and is a guy we talked about at the start of the year that would be useful on the power play," says Hodgins. "He's got to get a little quicker, quicker, and he knows that." One thing he was quick to adjust to was the difference in the mindset of playing at the junior level compared to minor hockey. One of the biggest areas of adjustment has been getting used to playing within a defensive and offensive system, something something that's in contrast to the wide-open style of midget hockey. "Here you concentrate on playing more systems," says the OAC student at Anderson Collegiate. "In midget there is such a wide range from y otir best player to your lowest lowest player. You have guys who stand out and can go end-to-end." The grind of the regular season continues Saturday in Syracuse against the 3-22-0- 0 Stars, followed by a home game Sunday night at 6:30 p.m. with the 8-15-0-2 Peterborough Peterborough Bees. The weekend presents a golden opportunity for the Eagles to rack up some points against a couple of weaker teams after playing a stretch of games against the elite of the conference. "It's been a tough stretch," says Hodgins. "We've played some tough games lately. Even if you're playing at your best, it's hard to beat some of these teams." THE SCOOP - Goal- tender Rick Miller failed to make his debut with the Sudbury Wolves over the weekend after getting called up by the Ontario Hockey League team, in a practice last Thursday in Sudbury, Miller hurt his knee and was back in Bowmanville as a spectator by Sunday. Dave Yargo, of the Port Perry MoJacks, the Jr. C affiliate of the Eagles, served as the backup against Port Hope on Sunday aftemoon.- He was also the backup later that night when his MoJacks tied Little Britain 5-5. «mi/) o.'ïn OOC n, n 0) w w o Ti o o -- ^7j cfl > o ra o is 5 E g ^mg " ÿo o row M,(o< g~07 0)0 t h „ S s >"g,o g g 8 ! ^ <5 o 0) îâEgoro . 15 S Its " twists.; twists.; " Other sizes also on sale ...
