t t r i PAGE 12THE CANADIAN STATESMAN, JANUARY 8,2003 www.durhamregion.com Part on target at world dart championship It's been almost nine years since John Part shot himself into Canadian sporting history, becoming the first non-Briton to win the Embassy World Professional Darts Championship in 1994. The Oshawa resident seemed in awe of his achievement back then, joking with a large gathering of media at the Queen's Hotel in the wake of his victory, getting what seemed to be his Andy Warhol allotment of fame. But now he's back in the headlines, proving his 1994 title was anything but a fluke. Part, known in the darts' hotbed of Great Britain as 'Darth Maple', a moniker reflecting both his talent and his Canadian roots, dethroned defending defending champ Phil 'The Power' Taylor in a thrilling 7-6 final of the Lad- brokes.com World Championship Sunday. Just how big is Part's victory? Taylor isn't just the defending champ; he's the EIGHT-time defending defending champ, the Tiger Woods of darts. Part, who is no slouch himself, entered entered the championship as the second- ranked player in the world. But he has had more than his share of problems against Taylor in the past, losing the 2001 final to the world's No. 1 player by an embarrassing 7-0 margin. He also lost to Taylor in the world matchplay and world grand prix events in 2002. Bringing Taylor's eight-year domination domination to an end was more than a little emotional for Part, who was inducted into the Oshawa Sports Hall of Fame in 1998. "I was almost in tears on the stage at the end," Part told Planet Darts fol- Brian Legree Sports Editor blegree@durhamretzion.com lowing the match. "I really had to fight it. "It was a relief because it's the fourth world final I've played him in, the second World Championship. The last time I was here two years ago, I was pretty much disgraced." Part had to play the role of scrappy Canuck to win the title. After jumping out to a 4-1 lead, he suddenly found himself trailing 5-4. But Part, who can often be found tossing a few darts at the Sports Station Station pub on Philip Murray Drive, didn't didn't panic. "I've played a lot of darts and I knew inside of me that it would turn my way again and it did," said Part. "Momentum only lasts so long and he had so much to do that I knew I would get my chance to run with the ball again. And I ran with it. "Eventually it did click back in for me. It got scary but I stayed there," said Part, who earned about $126,000 (Cdn.) for his victory. Part also earned plenty of praise from the now former champ. "He played superb," Taylor said of Part. "The difference was he hit his doubles doubles and I didn't. It's not very often that 1 get beaten, but I got beaten in style." "This is always a difficult time of the year, guys are worried about this and worried worried about that and things will settle down here," says Oshawa coach and general manager George Burnett, who would like to add a veteran, veteran, puck-moving defence- man prior to the deadline. "There's nothing imminent, imminent, but we'll continue to monitor that," Burnett said. "We're heading on the road Thursday morning for the weekend, so I don't know that I'll do anything in the last couple of days. But we'll continue to look, a few calls and such but there's nothing other than people trying to get our best players and I'm not moving our top guys." Oshawa's top guys lived up to their billing Sunday, as the Generals got goals from Brandon Nolan, Nathan Horton and Jamie Johnson in a 3-1 win over the Belleville Bulls. Johnson added an assist to reach the 60-point plateau ( 16-44-60), and the over- ager currently holds down sixth spot in the OHL scoring scoring derby, a whopping 36 points back of leader Corey Locke of Ottawa (41-55- 96). Chris Bcckford-Tseu made his fifth straight start in goal, making 24 saves. "We've had two straight strong games from Chris now, which is very encouraging," encouraging," said Burnett. Despite the weekend success, which also included included a 4-3 win in London, Burnett remains very concerned concerned about Oshawa's play. "It's a sign of immaturity, immaturity, maybe, winning^vise is that when you get an early lead is that we think, 'hey, here's a chance for us to score some goals'," said Burnett, alluding to a stat- padding mentality. "We have to continue to do the things... it's not easy to put the puck off the boards sometimes, but that's the right tiling to do. So we'll continue to learn, use some video, reinforce it." The Generals, now 21- 15-1-1 on the season, get a big test in their next couple of games, travelling to Windsor Thursday to lake on the Spitfires. Windsor sits second in the West Division Division with a 25-13-1-1 record and will be buoyed by the return of sniper Kyle Well- wood, who will be back in the lineup after helping Canada win a silver medal at the World Junior Hockey Championships. On Friday, the Generals arc in Sarnia to tackle the Sting, who are lied with the Spits in second place (23- 11 -5-1 ) and are the most penalized penalized team in the league with 1219 penally minutes in 40 games (Oshawa has 738 in 38 games). Next home game for the Generals is Sunday when the Mississauga Ice Dogs visit for a 6:35 p.m. start.
