< PAGE 12THE CANADIAN STATESMAN, JANUARY 15,2003 www.durhamregion.com Generals bigger, but are they better? BY BRIAN LEGREE Sports Editor OSHAWA - With the Ontario Hockey League trade deadline now firmly in the rearview mirror, the Os- liawa Generals are certainly a bigger team than they were at the start of the season. Since the fall, Oshawa coach and general manager George Burnett has brought in a substantial amount of size to his roster through a series of trades, adding: • Colt King, a 6-foot-3, 220-pound winger; • Michael Gough, a 6-foot-3, 230- pound winger; • Fred Hatziioannou, a 6-foot, 218-pound defenceman; • Ladislav Kolda, a 6-foot-1, 206- pound defenceman; • Ahren Nittel, a 6-foot-3, 215- pound forward. Now that they're bigger, the question question becomes: Are they belter? The short answer is - they better be. The Generals have been billed as a team of considerable promise this season, possessing offensively skilled players like Jamie Johnson, Nathan Horton and Brandon Nolan, and sufficient sufficient grit from bangers like Ben Eager and Mike Sellan. Yet this club, expected to be among the DHL's elite this season, finds itself just a handful of games over the .500 mark, more than a dozen points behind Ottawa, Kitchener Kitchener and Plymouth, the leaders of the pack. Certainly the Generals have endured endured more than their fair share of ad- seven games remaining in January, all against opponents opponents with winning percentages percentages below Oshawa's. It's a chance for the Generals to put a winning streak together, together, an opportunity to move closer to the 67's and solid-' ify their position in the conference conference standings. Those games are the first big test for the new-look Generals. The second comes in early February, when Oshawa Oshawa can measure its game against the DHL's big three - hosting Kitchener on Feb. 2, Ottawa on Feb. 6, before travelling to Plymouth on Feb. 8. Those games should provide answers about whether bigger is better for the Oshawa Generals. Burnett has addressed what he believes are his team's shortcomings, shortcomings, adding veteran depth in the form of overager Gough and 19-year-old wingers King and Nittel, along with experi enced, mobile, puck-moving defencemen in Kolda and Hatziioannou. Is it enough to narrow the gap between the Generals and the 67's, Rangers and Whalers? Burnett certainly has to believe believe that's the case. At the 40-game mark of the season, the coach and GM has sized up the opposition in the Eastern Conference and can see what we all see in the standings. standings. In the East, the road to the OHL final goes through Ottawa. Ottawa. The Generals have shown an ability to compete with the 67's, handing Ottawa one of its two home losses this season, a 3-1 victory in November. The Generals have also dropped a pair to the 67's, by 3-1 and 5-2 verdicts, with three meetings to come. Oshawa is entering a crucial segment in its schedule, with Telma Grant Registered Physiotherapist "Acupuncture and Whiplash" Q. Telma, I slammed my head backwards, and now my neck is killing me. How can physiotherapy help? A. You are describing a classic whiplash injury, so called because your head whips back and forth, causing injury to your neck. The first thing you should do is sec your medical doctor. He/she will check for serious damage such as fractures or concussions. Once these have been ruled out, sec Your Physiotherapist. Two things which happen after a whiplash is inflammation of the soft tissues and sympathetic overdrive. What this means is that your body is experiencing the flight or fight response, even after the whiplash is over. The first few acupuncture treatments is to calm the system down, and relieve the inflammation. Your Physiotherapist is an expert at pain management. Acupuncture is safe to use right after a whiplash. The sooner you get to Your Physiotherapist after a whiplash, the sooner you will get relief. Grant Physiotherapy 214 King St., E. Bowmanvillc "Count on us!"
