It was around Christmas in 1984 when Bob Nicholls turned to the Lung Association of Durham Region for help. He quit smoking, and also became one of the organization's most valued volunteers. volunteers. The non-profit group that strives to improve respiratory health through community community programs and supports medical research recently honoured the Orono resident as its volunteer of the year. The Steven Shumovich Volunteer of the Year Memorial Award was established established in 1999 in memory of one of the leaders of the successful Sign Off Smoking Smoking program. Mr. Shumovich, a Durham resident, who was also an advocate of an anti-drug program, joined the public relations relations and marketing team and volunteered volunteered to sit as a board member. He lived with asthma until the age of 27. The group chose Mr. Nicholls, 67, because of his committed contribution to various Lung Association endeavours. "He's compassionate and passiorrate about what he does," says Dianne McKenzie, development co-ordinator for the Lung Association's Durham branch. "He's always been there." Mr. Nicholls became active in the organization organization when he retired from Goodyear Tire in Bowmanville eight years ago. He donated the money from his retirement luncheon to the Lung Association. Association. "It was a project I liked and I supported,',' supported,',' he says. Shortly after leaving work, he began delivering tulips to support support the Lung Association's annual fund-raiser. This year's Tulip Day is on Wednesday, Feb. 26. His work took off from there, and he's now involved in fund-raisers including including selling the Golf Privilege Book that contains discount coupons >for golf , courses and PULL for \Kids that raises money for the Asthma Action help line. The Lung Association benefits greatly greatly from the numerous business contacts Mr. Nicholls has in thé community. "He's a fountain of information," Ms. McKenzie says. Mr. Nicholls gathered most of his sources when' he served as district commissioner of Scouting for six years. "I know lots of people and we've become become friends. I'm never afraid to ask them for something." Mr. Nicholls is a busy man who's also involved in numerous other volunteer volunteer endeavours. Teen workshop CLARINGTON - Local teens looking looking for ways to make changes can take advantage of a two-day workshop. Ward 1 Councillor Jane Rowe calls the 'Take Change, Create Change' workshop "exciting". The forum pledges to teach youth how to "turn your ideas into action." She. says the workshop is free. Youths must commit to both workshops workshops on Saturday, Feb. 22 and Saturday, Saturday, April 26 at the Courtice Community Community Complex, 2950 Courtice Rd. Topics include awareness, leadership and team building.
