www.durhamregion.com THE CANADIAN STATESMAN, JANUARY 22, 2003 PAGE 7 Students spending two hours on bus rides STUDENTS from page 1 i buses. Of those, 13 arc routes with a maximum travel time of more than one hour and 10 minutes. • Ten of the affected students are from Clarington, 81 from Northumberland County, 75 from Victoria County and 65 from Peterborough County. "For Clarington it's not as huge as the rest of the board," says Mrs. Malone. Meanwhile, some students in Peterborough Peterborough County face the same problem, says Joel Sloggctt, the board's manager of transportation. For example, he says, the children of four rural families who send their children children to St. Martin's in Ennismore spend an hour and 10 minutes on the bus. "It's affecting a small number of kids in that area," he says. "We'd have to add vehicles to do express runs to get them there in under an hour." He says in Peterborough County, it's more of a problem for high school students, students, adding it's not a serious issue in Peterborough and it's nothing new to the board. 'This is what's offered...this is how it works," he says. The Catholic board serves a wide area similar to the public school board but there arc fewer Catholic schools serving that area. "In the city, it's not really an issue. In the countryside, the routes get larger," said Mr. Sloggctt. Peterborough County trustee Joe Whibbs says he hasn't received any complaints from parents. "I have not received any phone calls this year and I'm sure people would feel comfortable in phoning," he said before the board meeting. He says an hour's ride should be the guideline. "Even then, that is pushing it." However, parents who live in rural areas have to expect a longer wait, said Mr. Whibbs. "If I'm a parent and I live way in the boondocks, then I'd have to expect an extended bus time," he says. Mr. Whibbs, who lives in Douro, says his daughter spent 50 minutes on a bus to get to school. "It was a long wait -- it meant she had to get up earlier," says Mr. Whibbs. "But she survived it. She's in university now." y ISaturday, January 25 - 8 PMI y HOLIDAY INNOSHAWA 1011 Bloor SI.
