www.durhamrcgion.com THE CANADIAN STATESMAN, FEBRUARY 5,2003 PAGE 5 Generosity extended by police officers for Clarington constable GENEROSITY from page 1 dire circumstances," the chief says. Without the assistance of his co-workers, Const. Walsh said it would have been touch-and-go whether he could have afforded the luxury luxury of giving his father that life-saving gift. Two trips to Calgary, one lor pre-op work and another for the actual surgery, along with accommodation accommodation during the trips, was costly and Const. Walsh explains, "1 have two kids to support. It would have been tough to do. It's phenomenal considering I've only been on the force two years. People People don't know me." With expenses and lost time from work, "you almost have to be rich to donate a kidney," a sad fact given the dire need for more live donors, he says. He is hoping his lobbying efforts may prompt the Alberta government government to change its policy about donor expenses so the option will be available to more people. But for the Walsh family, this story does have a happy ending. Immediately following following the surgery, Mr. Walsh senior " looked like a new person," says his son. For the constable, recovery time will be a little longer. The operation operation is quite invasive to the body and the earliest he expects expects to be back on light duty is June. "1 anticipate going back out on the road and being 110 per cent - in a while," he says. For him the bottom line is seeing his dad restored to health. "The end result is what matters." SOUTH BOWMANVILLE jg (905)623-7100 / The Comfort Zone by Glenn Trider The Comfort lone returns to this paper after a four year hiatus. It was a regular column in the former Clarington Independent until July of 1998. We receive many inquiries of general interest each week which I thought might benefit some of you. With the cold weather of the past week down to -26" C., many people have called complaining of dry noses and a sore throat. Why is that? In very cold weather our heating systems arc running much of the time. As they heat the air the relative humidity drops quickly. The very cold air outside docs not have the ability to hold much moisture. As it infiltrates into your house and it is heated the relative humidity quickly drops to below 15% R.H. This condition of low humidity is not good because (a) It contributes to drywall cracking and nail "pops" because the wood dries out, causing the nafls to lose their fastening strength. (b) It causes furniture to crack and stresses wood because it dries out. (c) Baseboard k other trims contract slightly resulting in gaps & stress gaps. (d) The low relative humidity in the house makes people feel chilly all the lime. This is because the low humidity level evaporates moisture from your skin at a very high rate. This is known as evaporative cooling, resulting in you feeling cold, much like getting out of the show.er into a cooler area like your bathroom. (e) It dries your skin & nasal passages out resulting in itchy skin, sore mouths, sore nose, and increases your chance of getting colds and viruses. Adding a centralized humidifier on you furnace raises the humidity levels to a comfortable zone. The luimidistat has recommended settings lor different outdoor temperatures. Many times we remove humidifiers because they were not mainlained well and leak water. Contractor quality humidifiers such as the General I042DM feature a flow through design resulting in low maintenance, no drums, or pads, no water leaking Moats and are much healthier in that no standing water sits in humidifier. The humidifier should operate only when the furnace runs in the heating mode and the gas or oil huniers are firing. This minimizes the amount of water and allows for maximum humidification. The cost of these Inimidiliers are low compared lo the benefits received, $2-15 lor the unit itself and $ 125 for .installation. Nest week: Fireplace information.
