Clarington checks out needs for hotel Province asked to help contribute to study BY JENNIFER STONE Staff Writer CLARINGTON - The municipality is asking for provincial funding to help determine if there's room at the inn. Clarington, along with Mosport International International Speedway and another private private partner, is applying to the Ministry of Agriculture for a grant to cover half the costs of a study which would assess the need for a local accommodations and conference centre. In December, municipal staff was contacted by a company which had been retained by Mosport to help it secure secure provincial funds to finance a detailed detailed marketing study. One of the barriers barriers to attracting tourism raised by municipal municipal staff was the lack of adequate accommodation and conference space. Under the ministry project, the Province could foot the bill for 50 per cent: of.the, $20,000-to-$4Q,OQO :stud>r. According to a staff report, such a study is necessary not only to help accommodate accommodate crowds visiting Mosport, but because Clarington is being considered considered as the potential site for ITER, an international fusion research centre project project Canada hopes to locate beside the Darlington nuclear station. "We do want to get it done to be proactive in terms of our economic development," development," says Frank Wu, Claring- ton's Chief Administrative Officer. . Should ITER come to Clarington, a hotel and conference centre is a given, says Mayor John Mutton. "We've got interest from hotels right now who have sent me letters saying if ITER comes they will build a hotel," says Mayor Mutton. The study will go a long way toward helping the private sector put forward a business case to get financing for such a project, he adds. "To be able to provide a business case through the study is a great step toward cutting red tape and making it easier for the private sector," lie says.
