What does standard, mid and high efficiency terms mean? it really boils down to lire A.F.U.E. rating that eaclt lias. Tltis term stands lor Amnnil Fuel Utilization Efficiency Rating. Standard Efficiency Furnaces: were furnaces made with natural draft design, incorporating pilot lites. These have been discontinued since tlic lute I980's. They were generally inefficient furnaces with AFUE rating between 60 - 70%. They require a metal chimney or masonry chimney to vent into. The pilot file itself is required to power lire gas side of the furnace and is wasteful as it runs 365 days a year, 2-1 hours a day. Sometimes in gusty, windy weather, enough downdraft can he created to blow out the pilot. You then have to relight the pilot to get tlte furnace to work. Mid-Efficiency Furnaces: are tut improvement over the standard , efficiency types. They have an AFU1T rating of 80',;. They feature an 1 improved heal exchanger design along with electronic ignition. While ' some may he approved to vent through walls, most generally still use an existing masonry or gas metal chimney (B-vent) to operate. They are the lowest cost replacement for an older gas ITtrnacc, lint with energy prices always on the rise are not the best choice for it homeowner intending to stay in his residence for the long term. Warranties are generally 5 years on these furnaces and 20-25 years on the lient exchanger. High-Efficiency Furnaces: whether gas or oil are furnaces with an AFUE rating of greater that 90%. This means that the line gas is; condensed or burns below 130" F. This means you van actually touch tlte venting with your hands! Plastic pipe is usually used to vent these furnaces in AHS or I'UC type. They can he vented up through a chimney hut usually are sidc-vcnlcd through the side of the house. In cold weather the water vapour condenses in the cold air resulting in a plume of white exhaust similar to a ear's exhaust in cold weather. Very few condensing oil furnaces are available currently, ns the extremely acidic condensate lias caused many technical problems. Most dealers are installing non condensing oil furnaces with AFUli's as high as 87',i. A high efficiency furnace is the host choice over the long haul, hut, they are more expensive to install than a mid-efficiency furnace and are mure to buy. They generally command a $11111 - $801) price premium. Break even on economics dictate that you need to he in the same house for 5 years to make the higher cost of the high-efficiency furnace pay. Also the resale value ol the house should Ity higher, pulling in a new furnace. Next Week: Tips on buyinp a furnace and the denier! This coupon entitles the holder to a .
