A group of area women is calling on the community to help them create create the $100,000 'Grace Fund' bursary bursary to assist young women aspiring to university education but without the means to gel there on their own. For Sandy Archibald, one of the women involved in launching the fund-raising campaign, the reasons for participating are personal. "The women in my family didn't go to high school let alone university," university," says the Bovvmanville farmer and entrepreneur, who was raised in a family steeped in Mennonite traditions traditions in Kitchener-Waterloo. Mrs. Archibald was the first woman in her family to finish high school, and did so with straight A marks. Then, as was expected of her, she ended her education and went out into the workforce. Though she found a good job running a "one-girl office" for a talent-booking agency, her heart was calling her to go back and get the skills necessary for social work. She did get to university and became became the first person in her family to graduate. "I had to work at it to get there, selling my car and making major changes in my life," she relates. relates. "I must admit I was quite scared when it came to cashing my very last pay cheque and selling my car. I wanted so much to work in the helping profession but the fear of not knowing whether I would make it through school and get a job was a little unnerving." Ruth Lafarga, former chairman of the Durham Community Foundation, initially came up with the idea for the bursary. She says a university education education should be open to anyone with the drive and ability to tackle it. "To be smart and not have that opportunity opportunity is a sad situation to me," she sàÿs : ;' 1 "A' :! ;' , '// Ms.' Lafàrga's inspiration for the Grace Fund was Jill Ker Conway, an Australian raised in the outback who went on to become a vice-president with the University of Toronto in the 1960s "which was a big deal then," says Ms. Lafarga. Ms. Ker Conway became president of Smith College in Massachussetts in 1975 and wrote about her journey from Australian outback to academic leader, due in part to a scholarship, in a trilogy, which includes 'A Woman's Education.' Education.' "1 thought that's what we should do to welcome this new university," relates Ms. Lafarga. The fund committee is hoping 2,000 people will each donate $50 to create a fund that "will leave a lasting lasting legacy that will benefit generations generations of women," says Ms. Lafarga. To date, about $5,000 has been raised. The money will be endowed, through the Durham Region Community Community Foundation, which would hold the money in trust and bursaries would be paid through interest from the fund, she says. The fund is named after Grace Annie Lockhart, the first woman in the British Empire to receive a bachelor's degree from a recognized university when she earned it at Mount Allison University University in New Brunswick in 1875.
