Ski conditions made for 'a good year' at Kirby Numbers up 40 per cent over last season DURHAM - Ski hills were not in need of natural snow this season as Mother Nature came through with lots of the white stuff. "It was probably the best year in four years," says Mike Pearson, outdoor operations operations manager at Dagmar Resort on Lakeridge Road. "And snow in the city helps us. The best advertisement for us is snow in the city... People think about skiing and come out." Lakeridge Ski Resort's manager Craig MacDonald agrees. He says it was a great winter for skiing. "Our season was pretty darn good, one of the best in recent years. There was a lot of natural snow," he explains. A few weeks were a bit cold, but that mostly just deterred night skiers, he says. 'They had to pick their days, that's for sure," adds Mr. Pearson. The greeting on the phone at Uxbridge's Skyloft Ski and Country Club sums the year up perfectly: "We had an amazing year," it explains. And the Oshawa Ski Club, in Kirby, was not without its share of winter weather. "It's been a good year," says office manager Linda Schaffer. "It's been a long season." She says the club opened Dec. 6; and hopes to see another couple of weeks of skiing before the snow is gone. She says the cold temperatures helped keep the snow on the slopes, requiring requiring less water and power to maintain the hills by making snow. She figures the number of skiers was up about 40 per cent compared to last year, although she says last year was a poor year for the ski business. She says the numbers arc still not as good as the 2000-'0l season, but this was still one of the better years in the last decade. In February alone, Ms. Schaffer explains, explains, 7,500 lift tickets were sold, not counting the 1,000 schoolchildren who visited the resort each week and the 5,800 regular members. The fact that there was no thaw, throughout the winter also helped, she says. "It got cold early and stayed cold," she adds.
