He is currently taking part in the war with Iraq. Newcastle couple await word from their son in Iraq BY JENNIFER STONE Staff Writer NEWCASTLE - When Dave and Roberta Patterson watch news from the war in Iraq, it's with a slightly different different perspective than most Durham residents. The Newcastle couple watch as parents of a young man who is in Iraq, fighting as part of the U.S. Marine Corps. They've not heard from their son, 20-year-old Lance-Corporal Daniel Patterson, Patterson, since a letter dated Feb. 20, just over a month after the marine shipped out from his base in California to join the U.S.-led fight in Iraq. "When we hear of marine casualties, we dread to pick up the phone," says Mr. Patterson. Patterson. Lance-Cpl. Patterson, who has dual citizenship since his mother was born in the U.S., joined the American Marines two-and-a-half years ago, upon completion of high school at Monsignor Paui Dwyer in Oshawa. An e-mail the Pattersons and other friends and family members received from Lance-Cpl. Patterson made it clear he felt he had made the right career decision. "When I came down here over two years ago, I never thought I would actually be going to combat, but now that See MARINE page 8 Residents BOWIMllVille Eagles WOIl't fly the coop, mayor vows oppose Kaitlin plans Possible moving of school and park angers homeowners BY JENNIFER STONE Staff Writer BOWMANVILLE - A proposal to change a west Bowmanvillc subdivision plan and build houses where a school and park were originally originally to be located may he overturned alter residents say they feel they were misled when buying their homes. But moving the Provincial Junior A hockey club to Whitby Whitby is a possibility, given a number number of factors, says team coowner coowner Peter Neal. "It's the old thing," snys Mr. Neal. "We want a number of things from the municipality. There arc a number of things we've put forth that we'd like to have done." Last week, Mr. Neal said the Eagles would he submitting a formal request to have the team move from the East conference to the South in time for next season, a move that could he Mayor John Mutton: Not happy about speculation of Eagles moving out of Bowmanvillc. the first step in uprooting the franchise and locating it in Whitby. Mr. Neal says rink improvements improvements and fan support arc among the necessities to keep the team in town, and that a meeting with the mayor and town staff to discuss such requests requests is necessary, But Mayor Mutton says a number of improvements at the Garnet B. Rickard Recreational Complex have already occurred, occurred, including the installation installation of a new sound system, and the promise of full seating in a currently empty section of the arena, should fan support necessitate it. As well, Mayor Mutton says the municipality is looking at concession and gate sharing and better office space for the club. The municipality also recently recently helped the team get its lottery licence hack, says the mayor. "1 would say that if Mr. Neal does not like Bowmanvillc, he should sell his minority ownership ownership and go back to Whitby as all he lias done is insult the community and the Eagles' fans and supporters," he says. But Mr. Neal says he means no insult. "Bowmanvillc is a really, really really good organization," says Mr. Neal. "They have really good people and 1 don't want to upset any of these people. "But they also have to real ize it's a business and they have to come to the table, whether it's fan support or the municipality municipality helping the team out. It's a privilege to have a junior A team in town. People have to realize there's a cost involved." The other issue, Mr. Neal says, is that Whitby would be a prime location for a Provincial Junior A team. He says the town is being blocked by other nearby teams from getting its own club. "There's no doubt Whitby should have a team," says Mr. Neal. "It's a good rink. It's a hockey town. It's got the best minor hockey system going at this point as far as Triple A teams. They've got good kids coming up through the system." system." Still, Mayor Mutton says lie's been assured by other team officials that the Eagles aren't moving. "There is no way the Bow- manville Eagles are leaving town at all," he told Clarington' General Purpose and Administration Administration committee Monday. - files by Brad Kelly A in wn m (7vi Wlî\m ItfJEK civic 166 King St. E.
