First, three players with local connections connections were plucked in Saturday's annual draft, including Justin Caruana, Eric Kemp and Donald Sanderson. Secondly, in the case of Caruana and Kemp, both could be in the lineup of the Bowmanville Eagles next season. season. Thirdly, Kemp and Sanderson were members of the Clarington Toros minor midget team last season, providing providing a level of optimism to other players going through the system. Caruana was the highest of the trio to be selected during the draft held over the Internet, going in the sixth round, 111th overall to the Peterborough Peterborough Petes. "I was really shocked, but thought it was great because I wanted to go there all along," said the 6-foot-1,180- pound left-winger. "I think I have what it takes to play there, I just have to work on my consistency," consistency," added the 15-year-old Orono resident. Describing his style of play as sc6if66hè'r\Vhb"lik'és' to' go in the cor- ners, play the body and grind it out, Caruana scored 19 goals and 58 points in 29 games while playing minor midget in Peterborough this past season. season. Justin Caruana: Orono resident drafted by the Peterborough Petes in the sixth round, 111th overall. With home games in the backyard of the Petes, the OHL club had plenty of opportunities to scout the talented forward. "The more we watched him the more we could see that he handles the puck really well," says Petes general manager Jeff Twohey. While Twohey says the team will keep an open mind during training camp in the fall, he feels the best place for Caruana next season will be with a Tier II junior team. "He needs a year of Tier II for development," development," confirms Twohey. "With some more consistency, he could be a good player at this level. "Most kids think they can come in and play at this level, but in order to get better they have to play a lot and in different situations. (Justin) will be more ready (for the OHL) if he goes back arid plâÿs in Tier II. Tô develop'to his full potential, he needs a year of Tier II." That's good news for the Bowmanville Bowmanville Eagles, who Caruana says he is interested in playing for, particular ly since his cousin, Matt, has been the team's best player the past two seasons. seasons. Kemp was drafted by the Brampton Battalion in the eighth round, 156th overall. The 6-foot, 175 pound defenceman defenceman is targeted to play Tier II next season said Brampton director of hockey operations and head coach Stan Butler. "We aren't an organization that likes uprooting kids. We think they should stay home and play with their Tier II teams. We hope Eric can make the Eagles, play regularly and we will monitor his development." The 15-year-old was an assistant captain with the Toros last season and played 10 games with the Eagles. "He's a steady defenceman who competes hard all the time. No matter what the score, he plays hard and that's a huge asset to have," added Butler. Sanderson was the final of the three to get picked, as Kitchener selected the 6-foot-2, 205-pound defenceman in the 14th round, 281st overall. "They both deserved to get picked," said Toro minor midget coach Reg Hebert. "Eric really stepped it up and reached a different level this season. He is very easy to coach and has- a good attitude," said Hebert, giving a scouting report on his two prized players. players. "Donald is very tough. He needed some confidence and we put him in situations where he was able to achieve." They are both the kind of guys you would love to have on your team," added Hebert. Generals bigger and better after draft First round pick used on 6-foot-6, 215-pound defenceman BY BRIAN LEGREE Sports Editor OSHAWA - The Oshawa Generals got a whole lot bigger - and George Burnett believes better - following Saturday's Saturday's Ontario Hockey League draft. The Generals, selecting 11 th overall, overall, grabbed 6-foot-6, 215-pound defenceman defenceman Justin Wallingford from the Hamilton minor midgets. "His physical attributes are pretty evident," says Burnett, Oshawa's coach and general manager. "He's 6-foot-6, about 220 and not yet 16 and he plays with an edge and we thought lie was one of the best passers in the draft. But we have to remember remember lie's coming out of (minor) hockey." In 49 games last season, Wallingford Wallingford compiled 9-22-31 totals, along with 111 penalty minutes. "We believe he is a (blue chipper)," says Burnett. "He has all the attributes and potential to be a lop player in our league and at the next level. We felt he was in a group of elite defencemen available in the draft - and it was a small group." Wallingford, who figured he wouldn't wouldn't be taken until late in the first round or early in the second, says he was "pretty shocked" when the Generals look him. Wallingford was co-captain of his Hamilton team last season and says he patterns his play alter Chris Prongcr of the St. Louis Blues, another 6-foot-6 blue-liner. Wallingford was the first of 12 players taken by the Generals in the draft, 10 of them 6-leet tall or bigger. Having dealt away their second round pick to Saginaw in the trade that brought Colt King to Oshawa, the Generals had a pair of third round selections selections and used them to grab a pair of forwards - Mike Kavanagh, a 6-fool-3, 185-pound right winger from the Hamilton Jr. Bulldogs and Gary Friesen, a 5-loot-11, 175-pound centre from Niagara Falls, Kavanagh posted 16-21-37 num- George Burnett: Coach and general manager says 'physical attributes are pretty evident' in first round draft pick Justin Wallingford. bers, along with 69 penalty minutes, in 39 games last season, while Friesen had a 28-24-52 season with 90 penally minutes in 36 games with the Niagara Falls minor midgets. Kavanagh was "the best player on his team this year," says Burnett. After scouting Kavanagh and Friesen during the season, the Generals Generals were hoping they could land both of them, says Burnett. "(Scout) Gilly (Hughes) and I sat in Burlington (on a scouting trip) and said we'd be excited to gel them in the third round," says Burnett. The Generals took five defencemen and seven forwards in the draft. Having also dealt away their fourth round pick, the Generals grabbed leftwinger leftwinger Kevin Parker of Halton (6- foot-l, 170-pounds) in the fifth round. In the sixth round, Oshawa took centre Scott Baker of the North Central Predators (5-loot-11, 150-pounds). Oshawa had two eighth-round picks and took a pair of defencemen, Brock Matheson of Ottawa Valley (6-lbot, 155-pmmds) and Bobby Davcy of the North York Rangers (6-lbot-1, 180- potuuls). The Generals also traded away their ninth and I Dili round picks in earlier deals. The rest of their selections were: • lllli round - Malt Chuchmach, Halton, centre, 6-foot, 175-potmds; • 12th round - Dylan Freeborn, Hamilton, right-winger, 6-foot-2, 155- pounds; • 13th round - Scott Todd, Amher- stview, defenceman, 6-foot-4, 230- pounds; • 14th round - Corey Hume, Gloucester, left-winger, 6-foot-1, 180- pounds; • 15th round - Harry Taylor, Toronto Toronto Young Nats, defenceman, 6-foot, 160-pounds. Every player selected was born in 1987, except for Todd, who was born in 1986. Under new OHL rules, three players players born in 1987 are eligible to make the Generals this season, the first two picks and one other player. The remaining remaining players born in 1987 are eligible eligible to appear in 10 regular season games next season prior to the conclusion conclusion of the World Junior Hockey Championships in early January, Burnett Burnett says. The Generals expect all of the drafted drafted players, along with those drafted in 2002 (except Adam Berti and Kyle Raftis), to attend a spring camp this weekend at North Oshawa Arena. The prospects will be on the ice Saturday at 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. and Sunday at 8:30. a.m. : Burnett expects to sign "two to : five" players from this camp for Os- , liawa's 2003-04 roster.
