i www.durhamregion.com THE CANADIAN STATESMAN, MAY 21,2003 PAGE 13 Gillespie a winner, but doesn't feel like one Derek Gillespie is the brightest shining star on the Canadian Tour, but he'd rather be in another galaxy. The Oshawa resident assumed assumed top spot on the Canadian Canadian Tour's order of merit over the weekend, blowing away the field at the Corona Ixlapa Classic Classic in Ixtapa, Mexico. After carding a seven- under-par 65 in the final round, Gillespie won by a whopping eight strokes over Jim Salinet- ti. The $24,000 (Cdn.) winner's winner's cheque gives him $32,760 after four events, good for top spot on the money list. Still, being top dog on the Canadian Tour is a matter of perspective. Kind of like being a jumbo shrimp. While Gillespie Gillespie recognizes the value of accumulating accumulating pro golfing experience, experience, now that lie's in his third year on the Canuck tour, he Brian Legree Sports Editor b!cgree@ dtirhaniregion. com wants to move to the next level. But that means he's forced to bide his lime, 6h a couple of different levels. In order to get status on the Nationwide or PGA tours, Gillespie will have to wait for the fall and the gruelling gruelling PGA Tour's qualifying school. Even on the Canadian Tour, Gillespie will have to have patience patience - in droves. The Canadian Tour offers an intermittent schedule. After a couple of weeks in Mexico, the tour is now idle until June 25 when the Northern Ontario Open tees off in Sault Stc. Marie. Not surprisingly, for a pro golfer to have his tour be without without an event for four weeks - basically in mid-season - doesn't doesn't sit well with Gillespie. "It sucks," says the 24-year- old in his traditionally blunt approach. "You kind of get on a roll and then you take a month off. It's no good, but what are you going to do?" Gillespie tried to qualify for the U.S. Open- at one of the USGA qualifiers in Houston Monday, but fell a stroke short of advancing. Later this week, he'll tee it up in a Great Lakes Tour event. It's a mini-tour, with minipurses. minipurses. But that's where Gillespie Gillespie finds himself at this point. He has to find places to play, maybe try a few Monday qualifiers qualifiers for the Nationwide Tour. LIQUIDATORS 4 Day IHWDAY INN - QMHBS 1011 Bloor St. E. (Exit off 401 Harmony Rd.) Kuehne has taken advantage of sonic sponsors' exemptions on the PGA Tour, played well and converted it into a regular spot on the big tour. "He gets opportunities a lot of guys don't," says Gillespie. "He's a former U.S. Amateur champ, he hits it 400-yards, the opportunity is there for him. A guy like me has to wait for Q-school." The University of Arizona product concedes he believed he'd be playing elsewhere by now. But like another Canadian Canadian Tour product - Mike Weir - who needed several years of grooming before moving on to the PGA Tour, Gillespie is learning that patience is truly a virtue in pro golf. "My first year was lough, I thought I'd walk through Q- school and it didn't go well and that's probably why I didn't didn't play well in my first year," he says. "I thought there was no money. I had a negative mindset." Still, he had enough game to win the Canadian Tour's rookie of the year in 2001 and finished it up by placing third on the money list last season. This year? "I have a different mindset than a couple of years ago. I'm getting older I guess. Now it doesn't matter. I'm playing pro golf for a living. That's the main thing. I'm not angry about anything, right now I'm just kind of going with the flow." And he's hoping that flow will ultimately carry him to the PGA Tour. Sale ends Saturday!
