Backyard Festival medical call sparks review Fireworks delayed while doctors on scene attend to young boy who fell ill BY JENNIFER STONE Staff Writer CLARINGTON - The Municipality Municipality will review how it provides on-site medical attention attention after a young boy collapsed collapsed during the Backyard Festival on Sunday. Fireworks were delayed by 30 to 40 minutes after the four- year-old fell ill at the fourth annual annual municipally-run Victoria Day weekend event at Mosport, Mosport, says Jennifer Cooke, Clarington's marketing and tourism manager. Two local doctors who were on hand for the festivities attended to him. After being treated on site by the doctors, the boy was taken by ambulance first to Lakeridge Health Bcnv- manville, then to Lakeridge Health Oshawa. He "responded well to whatever medication they gave him," and is recuperating recuperating at home now, says Ms. Cooke. The incident points to a need to review how emergency medical services can be delivered delivered at the event, says Ms. Cooke. "The ambulance got there as quickly as possible, but when you're waiting for something, five minutes seems like five hours," she says. Jennifer Cooke: Says incident points to a need to review liow emergency medical services can be delivered at events. Clarington Emergency and Fire Services personnel were also on hand to help out, notes Ms. Cooke. But, since there was no ambulance on site, it had to be dispatched from elsewhere elsewhere to transport the boy to hospital. Though the Municipality was told in past an ambulance would be unable to remain on hand throughout such an event, Clarington staff is now "looking "looking into that and trying to come up with a plan," says Ms. Cooke, noting with estimated crowds numbering 15,000, it's necessary to cover that base for future backyard festivals. "Obviously, it's getting to the point where we have to start taking a look at things," she says. "We're going to look into in and make all the necessary arrangements."
