By calling the Clarington Animal Shelter with a description, you may help to reunite an owner with their lost cat. The Animal Shelter staff keeps a log with listings of both lost and found pets. During kitten season we sometimes also have a list of cats waiting to come to the Animal Shelter as empty cages become available. available. DO NOT FEED STRAY CATS. Cats will often not return home if a free meal is offered. This is especially true for barn cats as they are expected to work for their living. Feeding them will draw them away from a place where they have shelter and a purpose, to become nuisance animals in residential areas. The Animal Shelter staff receive complaints about stray cats daily including: including: getting into garbage, running into traffic, fighting, spraying and using gardens gardens and children's sandboxes as litter boxes, killing birds and many more. Feeding stray cats also encourages them to congregate in numbers. This spreads feline diseases some of which are fatal to cats. It also increases the likelihood of successful breeding. Stray cats that are fed regularly will have more surviving kittens, which will increase the number of homeless cats. By encouraging encouraging a stray cat to stay with you by feeding feeding it and by not notifying the Animal Shelter staff you are taking on a commitment commitment to that animal. We use a period of 2 weeks beyond which we no longer consider it a stray, we consider it owned by the person who has been feeding it. If, in time, the cat becomes injured or ill, this also will be your responsibility, as the Animal Shelter staff will regard the animal as your pet. -- We encourage our residents to contact staff at the Clarington Shelter (905) 623-7651 to report stray cats so that we can take the appropriate measures to return them to their owners or to find them a good home.
