l PAGE 14 THE CANADIAN STATESMAN, JULY 30,2003 www.durhamrcgion.com Warriors 'disappointed' not moving on Bowmanville's Stephen Hoar captains team in final year of junior eligibility BY BRAD KELLY Staff Writer WHITBY - The Whitby Warriors didn't make it to the Minto Clip, but they have the feeling they played the team that will win it all. That was the thought of coach Jeff McComb shortly after his lacrosse club was eliminated in a four-game sweep by the St. Catharines Athletics in the Ontario Lacrosse Association Jr. A semifinals. "I think we were playing the team that will win the Minto Clip," McComb McComb declared during a post-game interview interview following his team's 9-3 loss Friday night at Iroquois Park Sports Centre in Game 4 of the best-of-seven series. "They're deep offensively, deep defensively defensively and they have the best goalie (Matt Vine) that's played junior lacrosse in the past 10 or 15 years. "If (St. Catharines) put any other goalie in the league in net we'd still be in the series. He's that good." To expect the Warriors to beat the Athletics in a seven-game scries was perhaps asking too much. The Athletics Athletics are defending league champions, losing to the Burnaby Lakers in last year's Minto Cup. They finished in Stephen Hoar: Closes out junior career after three seasons with Warriors. first place, 14 points (17-2-I) ahead of the fifth place Warriors (IO-9-l) this season, and were coming off a four- game sweep of Six Nations, outscor- ing the Arrows 69-13, including a 20- 0 shutout in one of the games. The Athletics were equally as dominating dominating against the Warriors, holding a sizeable 40-15 goals advantage in the four games. Despite the season coming to an abrupt end, McComb noted before the first game of the regular season that winning a round in the playoffs and getting to the semifinals would garner a measure of success for a predominately predominately young and inexperienced team. To that end, the lacrosse club reached its goal, but it still didn't take Dodgers finish strong to earn playoff berth Expect to play either Kitchener or Brantford in best-of-five quarterfinal series BY BRIAN McNAIR Staff Writer OSHAWA - The Oshawa Dodgers have every right to be pleased with the progress they've made in such a short period of time. After finishing off their inaugural campaign in the Intercounty Baseball League on a roll, earning a playoff spot and taking a tough Guelph team to the limit a year ago, the Dodgers were counting on bigger and better things when their second season began in May. So far, so good. The Dodgers beat the mighty Toronto Maple Leafs for the second time this season on Saturday and then finished off an impressive 20-16 regular regular season with a doubleheader split in Hamilton Sunday. Now if they can just figure out who they're playing next, they can set their sights on a first-ever playoff series win. The Dodgers left the weekend in sixth place, but could still move up to fifth. They will play either Kitchener or Brantford in a best-of-five quarterfinal. quarterfinal. "I think the bigger the game, the bigger the performance they give," manager Troy May said prior to the weekend. "1 think the guys get pumped up and play well against the better teams." That was certainly the case Saturday Saturday at Kinsmen Stadium, where the Dodgers clawed back from a 9-7 deficit through seven innings for a 10- 9 win over the first-place Maple Leafs. Whitby's Ryan Crotin wowed the 724 fans in attendance by blasting a pair of home runs for three RBIs and then scoring the, winning run in the ninth after a triple. "It is so much fun to play in front of this loud a crowd," said Crotin. "I can't wait to hear them in the playoffs." playoffs." Ryan Balan also had a home run and three RBIs, while Jamaal Joseph improved to 5-0 with the win in relief. On Sunday in Hamilton, the Dodgers opened with a 1-0 win before dropping a 7-0 decision in the nightcap. nightcap. Junior callups Chris England and Kevin Wallace were both given starts, England improving to 1-1 after tossing tossing a complete game two-hitter and Wallace falling to 0-4. As he did Saturday, Ken Calway delivered Crotin with the winning run in the opener. Balan slugged a pair of doubles in the finale. Playoffs could begin as early as tomorrow. tomorrow. Mark Craig and goaltender Michael McKay played their final games for the Warriors, graduating from the junior ranks due to age. While all three leave major holes to fill, the upside is the majority of the roster is eligible to return next season. "When 95 per cent of your team slays intact, we are looking to compete for an Ontario title next year," noted an optimistic McComb. THE SCOOP - In the 9-3 loss. Mat!
