www.durhamrcgion.com THE CANADIAN STATESMAN, JULY 30, 2003 PAGE 3 Tenant wins $25K dream garden; gives enormous gift to landlord for ■> BY JENNIFER STONE Staff Writer COURTIŒ - When Joe and Lorri Madeiros rented an apartment in their home to Marilyn Gregory three years ago, they didn't expect her to take over the gardening. But, with a stroke of a pen at a recent recent gardening show, she did just that. Ms. Gregory was the lucky winner, out of over 100,000 entrants provincewide, of a $25,000 Dream Garden from White Rose Home and Garden Centres. "My daughter said, "Do you want me to fill one out for you too, Mom?" and 1 said, "Oh, sure," Ms. Gregory recalls, noting, "I haven't won anything anything in so many years." But a few months later, she got a phone call saying she had, indeed, won. Then, since she lives in an apartment apartment with only a very small separate yard, she had to decide how to spend the money, especially since the prize could not be transferred to one of her own children. "Lorri and Joe are very, very close to me, and they're quite settled here. I don't plan on moving," she says. And so. the decision was made - the prize would go to her landlords so the whole yard, including Ms. Gregory's portion of it, could be redone. "I couldn't believe her generosity, to do that," says Mrs. Madeiros, a Courticc Road resident. "She just, out of the goodness of her heart, said she wanted to share it with us." Now comes the difficult part - how to spend the $25,000. They'll have help: a landscape designer from White Rose is to visit the home this week to help figure out how to make the prize best benefit the yard. "Since July 4 (just after finding out .about the prize), Marilyn and I have been, in our minds, going through what we would like to do," says Mrs. Madeiros, noting slic'd like to see something that's fairly easy to take care of. "1 love gardens. I love the looks of gardens. I am not a gardener... gardener... it has to be hardy, lots of perennials." Both women agree on one aspect of the garden, though they admit it won't eat up much of the $25,000. "We both want a nice patio and we both wouldn't mind having a new garden set - a table, chairs and umbrella," umbrella," says Ms. Gregory. • Though timelines have not officially officially been laid out, Mrs. Madeiros foresees work on some aspects of the yard beginning as early as September, with the project being completed next spring. But at this early stage, neither woman has any idea what the $25,000 worth of prizes will do for the yard. "1 am not the least bit artistic, so 1 can't even picture what it'll be like when it's all done," says Mrs. Madeiros. OPG bugged by West Nile Virus Darlington station controlling spread by larviciding BY MIKE RUTA Staff Writer DURHAM - Ontario Power Generation is doing its part to help control the spread of the West Nile Virus in Durham. OPG is larviciding catch basins and areas of standing standing water that cannot be drained at both the Pickering Pickering and Darlington nuclear generating stations. Two types of larvicide will be applied to kill mosquitoes mosquitoes that have not yet graduated to the flying stage: methoprene pellets in catch basins and granular biolarvicide in ditch and other areas where water collects, says OPG spokesman John Earl. While the stations are located next to the lake and might make good breeding grounds for the pests, he says the larvae kill isn't occurring occurring because it's especially especially buggy down at the water. OPG is larviciding at its sites in communities, such as Durham Region, that have opted to do the same, following their lead. "Our program is simply complimentary to what municipalities municipalities are doing," says Mr. Earl. Ministry of the environment-licensed environment-licensed applicators or trained technicians will apply the products. There will be no spraying, says Mr. Earl. "It's not anything that the population outside of our site is going to have any CONCERTS IN « THE » PARK ROTARY PARK (Queen Street - Bowmanville) Gypsy Grass Thursday, July 31st 7:00 p.m. sponsored by: Roy Nichols Motors and Rekker Gardens SnmmerHours Monday - Friday Saturday 8:00 a.m. te 3 p.m. IM1DAS Factory Scheduled Maintenance • Complete Automotive Repair • Licensed Technicians • Nationwide Guarantee • Lifetime Guaranteed Products 6SËÉE v MIDAS contact with," he says. The biolarvicide contains contains a bacterium that oc curs naturally in soils. When a mosquito larva eats it, the product damages the stomach and the insect starves to death. Methoprene works on certain pests such as mosquitoes mosquitoes by preventing them from maturing. oo CQ Upgrade Your Package FREE Package Price: 569,95 reduced to 549,95 'V - REPRINT Special 4x6"... 5x7"... 8x10". .... 50° .... 99 e $2.99 Reprints from Negatives or Slides only BRING COUPON. 1 Coupon per addresi E CO --i £ < -o 5 B LU U) m CL C ° (/) O O (I) ® CM g V) w ^ à *- < U ~cr « Ü?LL CL BABY STEPS MEMBERS JJ11 ; Double any one print, or receive DOUBLE your wallets ! « J | GET MORE.
