Instead, the hoekey eltib found out it's not made of ki vptonite after all. Hosting the defending league champion champion Wellington Dukes in Sunday's home opener, the Eagles carried a 3-1 lead into the third period against a team that lost just one game last season. But just like the man of steel, the Dukes managed to dodge a bullet, scoring three unanswered goals oxer the final 20 minutes minutes to escape the Garnet 13. Rickard Recreation Complex with a 4-3 win. It was the second loss in a row for the Eagles to open the Provincial Junior A Hockey League season, as they also dropped a 7-5 decision in Bancroft to the Hawks Friday night. If there is any consolation to the O- I'er weekend, particularly in the loss to Wellington, it's that the Dukes appear as strong, if not stronger, than last year's team that competed for the Royal Bank Cup. As an example. Wellington opened the season with a 10-0 thrashing of Ciibourg. indicating their 47-1-1-0 record last season was no fluke. "It's a tough loss to swallow." said coach Curtis Hodgins. "We've got a room full of disappointed guys. They worked hard and I can't say anything but positives about their effort. "In the end. experience won out over youth." Goals by Matt Caruana. Steve Seed- house and Chris Wood staked the Eagles to a 3-1 second-period lead following a scoreless opening period. But Wellington Wellington pumped three by Eagles' rookie net- minder Daniel Colliding over the final 20 minutes, including a pair by Brent Varty and the winner by Warren Cooper with just 2:24 remaining. While the Eagles played with a lead Sunday, it was the complete opposite Friday in Bancroft, as they trailed throughout, falling behind 4-0 after the first and 7-1 late in the second before RON PIETRONIRO/ Statesman photo Tom Fitzpatrick (28) of the Bowmanvillc Eagles collides with Derek Smith of the Wellington Dukes during Sunday's home opener mounting a small comeback. "The last 40 minutes (in Bancroft) and the 60 minutes (against Wellington) showed what this club is capable of and it's encouraging." noted Hodgins. "We've got a good hoekey club here. It may take awhile though because we have a tough schedule right off the bat."
