NEWCASTLE - Sylvia Lisk Vanhaverbeke has been elected to an international position that will help her draw the Christian world together together in prayer. The Newcastle resident has been elected chairman of the International Committee for World Day of Prayer, a worldwide movement of Christian women of various denominations. The group works together to foster fellowship, fellowship, understanding and action, as well as plans the annual World Day of Prayer, which takes place each year on the first Friday of March. Being involved with dif ferent Christian faiths isn't new to Mrs. Lisk Vanhaverbeke, Vanhaverbeke, who was raised in the United Church of Canada, but became Roman Catholic when she married her husband, husband, Ed Vanhaverbeke. "It's a bit of an ambassador ambassador role," says Mrs. Lisk Vanhaverbeke, who was elected to the position at an event in England in early September. She was nominated nominated by Denmark and four other countries, and got the nod, on the first ballot, over nominees from Kenya and Guyana. "Part of my role is disseminating disseminating grant money raised through World Day of Prayer for projects that will help women and children in developing countries," says Mrs. Lisk Vanhaverbeke, a member of the St. Francis of Assisi parish in Newcastle. To that end, she'll be travelling travelling to Serbia next month to meet with other members of the organization to determine where the money should go. Another important aspect of the role is to spread the message to areas that may not have previously had the chance to get involved in such organizations, she says. "Partially, at this time, (the role includes) reaching out to other Christian faiths that want to get involved, especially especially in Eastern Bloc countries countries where the right to worship worship has been denied until recently," recently," says Mrs. Lisk Vanhaverbeke.
