Mom, son found CLARINGTON - A missing Courtice mother and child have been located safe and sound in Montreal, police say. Durham Regional Police said Aliannis Yanet Rodriguez-Albveme, 22, and her 14-month-old son Sidney were found late last week thanks to help from the public. Mrs. Rodriguez-Albveme was reported reported missing last month by her husband husband after leaving their Hillhurst Crescent Crescent home with their son, Sept. 25. Shocking news to local businessman Class weighs in on recycling SHOCKING from page 1 lions went missing Sept. 4 along with databases contained in four computers when they were stolen from a CCRA Laval, Que. tax office. He is still reeling from the shocking news. "I was astounded a federal agency could be so negligent," he says. "1 have no faith whatsoever in government. All the images and bad thoughts I've ever had about the government have been proven. I think the (National Revenue) minister (Elinor Caplan) should resign." Despite the early September theft, the CCRA waited until Sept. 30 to alert the public, and Mr. Strong almost a month later than that. "You have to be able to trust," he says. "To take this long to notify me ... they're always trying to hide something." something." The CCRA letter advised him to "carefully review and verify all your bank account, credit card, and other financial financial transaction statements... " Who should he call in case of trouble? trouble? Not Canada Customs and Revenue Agency. "If you suspect irregularities," the letter continued, "contact your financial financial institution. If you notice any problems with the delivery of your mail, contact Canada Post." The letter was signed by "Alan Ny- mark, commissioner" and dated October October 2003. Is Mr. Strong worried? You betcha. "I just had a security check because I was working on a nuclear plant and everything was OK but that's what terrorists terrorists want, a clean record," says Mr. Strong, a former vice-chairman of the Oshawa Hydro Commission. "When I was a hydro commissioner, you had an obligation to protect information like that." A name, address and social insurance insurance number is all black market forgers need to get phoney Canadian passports. The final insult for Mr. Strong is the way in which he was informed of the fact the most sensitive details of his life are up for grabs for possible criminal or terrorist use. The notice was sent by regular mail in a CCRA envelope. "We use regular mail for many sensitive sensitive documents, such as notices of assessment," assessment," explains Ottawa-based CCRA spokesman Collette Gentes- Hawn. As for Mr. Strong's worry and potential potential hardship, she explains, "Contractors "Contractors are required to report (to CCRA) whenever they hire subcontractors like an electriciàn or plumber, and how- much they paid, them." When asked if she thinks the financial financial stability of the 120.000 contractors is in jeopardy, she said she doesn't believe believe fraud or identity theft was the point of the break-in. CLASS from page 1 machines and trucks, he added. Illustrating how the Region measures measures each truck delivery, the class clambered on top of a giant scale to be weighed, coming in around 2,480 lbs. Next stop was the sorting warehouse, where the 'green monster" - a giant baler that compacts cardboard into 772 to 1,102 lb. bales - and then organizes the paper to be shipped to another facility. facility. "Would you throw money in the garbage?" asked Bunny Lockett, the waste management technician who led the tour, pointing to trucks dumping cans and bottles in huge industrial bins. "These arc valuable, they help us save money. "If you put something in a landfill, it's gone forever." DURHAM REGION Additional Water Supply Plant Capacity for the Whitby / Oshawa / Courtice Urban Area PUBLIC INFORMATION CENTRE WORKS DEPARTMENT PUBLIC NOTICE PROJECT BACKGROUND The Region of Durham is undertaking a Class Environmental Assessment to identify the preferred method of providing additional water supply plant capacity to service future growth in the Whitby / Oshawa / Courtice Urban Area. The planning of this project is proceeding as a Schedule 'C undertaking in accordance with the requirements of the Municipal Class Environmental Assessment - June 2000, as prepared by the Municipal Engineers Association. Alternative methods of providing additional water supply plant capacity are being identified and evaluated based on the following: Natural Environment Social Environment Economic Environment • Cultural Environment • Regulatory Requirements • Technical Feasibility Additional information on the Municipal Class EA process is available on the Region of Durham website under the Works Department page. PUBLIC INPUT The first Public Information Centre for this project will be held on Wednesday, November 12, 2003, between 4:30 pm and 8:30 pm at the Heydenshore Pavilion, 589 Water Street, Whitby. Representatives from the Region of Durham and the project consultant, Totten Sims Hubicki (TSH) Associates, will be available to present information on the project and answer questions from attendees. Public input and comments for consideration during the planning process of this project is encouraged. There are 3 primary methods to transfer or conduct heat. 1. Conduction: This is easiest to explain by grasping something that is cold with your hand. I leal flows from a warmer substance to a cooler substance. After a short time your skin temperature drops and your hand feels cold. Although this happens all the time in healing your home conduction would he too slow to transfer enough heat quickly enough. 2. Convection: This is the transfer of heal through some medium. It can he forced air. hydronies through water and other methods. It is via convection that most heating appliances work and use this type of heat transfer. 3. Radiation: This is the transfer of heat through heal waves or the electro magnetic spectrum. It is best explained by the feeling of driving in your car with the sun shining through the side window. Via radiation the heat rays of the sun strike your face while the other side stays cool, liver walk on a bitterly cold sunny day and yet if there is little wind and the winter sun is shining brightly your face can actually feel comfortable. Once the sun goes down the radiation is gone and the earth radiates heat hack out to space. In the heating business there are appliances (hat use this effect. As mentioned before convection is the most popular means of beat distribution. In southern Ontario forced air lias been and will continue to he the most popular method of healing and cooling your house. It is popular because of the demand for central air conditioning which needs forced air to transfer heat and it still remains the least expensive method to install in a home incorporating healing and cooling. Duel work usually made of galvanized metal is used to move and contain the forced air as it moves down and away from the furnace. Many fittings can be fabricated and there is extensive knowledge required to properly design, make and install duel work. Proper sizing is critical to ensure that ever)' room in the house is comfortable. Many people call to ask me to correct a family room above a garage that feels cold. In designing the heal needed for that area extensive info lias to be calculated regarding the heat loss, and therefore the amount of heat required to he delivered. Generally more outlets may be required as well as the main trunk duct may need to he sized larger. It is important to balance your duel work by adjusting the metal round dampers located usually below your floor register. Hvdionic or hot water heating uses hot water pumped via a circulator or hot water source through a series of heat emitters or rads. Old homes have the so called Old Fashion Cast Iron Radiators which can he large and a hit obstructive. They are one of the best methods to emit heal and many a person coming in from the cold has snuggled up to one of these to warm up! Newer designs arc smaller slimmer hut require more linear footage of material to give off the same heal. Hydronic heating is more efficient and a superior way to heal your home. It is silent, dustlcss, and very even for temperature distribution. Its big disadvantage is higher cost.and difficult integration with cooling systems, ie.: you would need a separate cooling system installed if you wanted air conditioning. Appliances using radiation use some substance that when heal emits infrared radiation. Radiant tube heating and radiant floor heating are examples. Radiant floor healing is by far the absolute best way to heat especially in the basement areas. The extreme uniformity in heal distribution plus the gentle emitting of heat at floor level means you will never need slippers or gel cold feet again! Call me if you would like more information. Again the downside is cost and lack of integrating central air easily. Next week: Oil fired and wood fired furnaces. 1 - Majestic RHE Series Inserts reduced. Now from 51,399.00. i - Save SS.
