NEWCASTLE - A 51-year-old woman suffered two deep bite wounds after she was knocked down and attacked attacked by a pit bull running loose. Durham Regional Police said the victim and a friend were walking a small dog on Mill Street about 8 p.m. Friday when the dog charged them. "Her friend picked up her dog to protect protect it from the pit bull, and the victim was knocked down to the ground," said Sergeant Paul Malik. He added the woman tried to shield her face from the dog's attack and was bitten on the arm causing puncture wounds. A passing motorist honked his horn and scared the dog off, he said. The pit bull's owner was identified as officials are investigating. The victim a Mill Street resident and animal control was treated at hospital and released.
