www.durhamregion.com THE CANADIAN STATESMAN, NOVEMBER 5, 2003 PAGE 17 Generals pull trigger on deal, but misfire against Kingston Six-player deal made for now and the future BY BRIAN McNAIR Staff Editor OSHAVVA - The Os- liawa Generals are not only set up better for tomorrow, but they're also a stronger club today if George Burnett Burnett has it figured right. That's the assessment made by Burnett after he pulled off a shocking six- player swap with the Kingston Frontenacs just prior to Friday's game between between the two OHL East Division rivals. Burnett, who has shown no fear with respect to making trades in his three- plus years as the coach and general manager of the Generals, says he has addressed addressed some immediate needs: namely, depth at centre and added scoring punch. In case you missed it, here's the deal: Oshawa sent 19-year-old goalie Chris Beckford-Tseu, 19- year-old winger Evan Kot- sopoulos and 17-year-old defenceman Kyle Raftis to Kingston in exchange for 18-year-old goalie Dan Turple, 19-year-old centre Brandon McBride and 17- year-old centre Clay McFadden. McFadden. The two teams also traded fifth round draft picks. "1 think it gives us much more depth and offensive offensive capabilities and makes a lot of sense for a lot of reasons," says Burnett, Burnett, whose club fell 4-1 to Kingston Friday. "You have to pay a price to achieve some things and I think we did pay a price." Beckford-Tseu was the most prominent player in the deal. A fifth-round draft pick of the St. Louis Blues, he struggled with the Generals this season and continued to do so this weekend with Kingston, coming away with two losses and a 5.45 GAA. Although it was rookie Ryan Gibb's fine play that allowed Burnett to deal away his top nefminder, he also likes Turple and says he hasn't decided who his new go-to guy is just yet. "They should push each other and share it (the No. I job) for the short term until we go with the guy with the hot hand," says Burnett. "Ryan's played extremely well. 1 think the two of them will complement complement each other well." Gibb has a 2.59 GAA in 10 games with the Generals, Generals, while Turple, who stands 6-foot-5, had a 3.26. GAA in nine games with Kingston. Both are 18 and former stars of the Provincial Provincial Junior A Hockey League. McBride, a 6-foot-2, 202-pound Whitby native, is coming off an injury- shortened season in which he posted 15-24-39 numbers numbers in 47 games. This season, season, he had 2-5-7 stats in 12 games. "He provides us with a good, solid player at both ends of the rink," Burnett says of McBride, also a strong overage prospect a year from now. McFadden, 6-foot-3 and 161 pounds, had 3-8- II numbers in 59 games last season and 2-0-2 totals Dodger fans prefer Saturday afternoon home games OSHAWA - The votes are in - and the status quo has ruled. The Oshawa Dodgers sent out e-mails last week, asking fans to choose from one of three possible home dates for the 2004 Intercounty Intercounty Baseball League season. The traditional Saturday at 2 p.m. slot earned about 70 per cent of the 500-plus votes, beating out Sunday JBË §i at 5 p.m. and Sunday at 7 p.m. The Dodgers play out of Kinsmen Stadium. Season tickets for the 2004 season can be purchased purchased at the 2003 price ($40 for 18 games) until Dec. 1. If interested, mail a cheque to the Oshawa Dodgers at 1288 Ritson Rd. N., Suite 356, Oshawa, Ont., LIG 8B2. Please recycle in nine games this season. "Clay McFadden is a very talented talented guy who didn't have a great chance last year in Kingston," says Burnett. "I think lie's a guy where a change of scenery will help." The new-look Generals (5-8-4-1) have a rare Thursday home date this week, facing off against the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds (10-6-1-1) at 7:05 p.m. at the Civic Auditorium. GENERALLY SPEAKING: Another Another recently-traded goalie will return return to Oshawa Thursday, as Kevin Druce leads the Greyhounds into town. He has an 8-6-1 record, 2.45 GAA and .928 save percentage this season. There are apparently no ill feelings, either, as Druce's parents, Mac and Cheryl of Kingston, recently recently sent a letter to This Week praising the Oshawa/Whitby area and the Generals in particular... Don't look for Whitby's Matt Maccarone in the Soo lineup. He has been traded to the Sudbury Wolves for Pickering's Brett Connolly...Nathan Horton scored his first NHL goal for the Florida Panthers Saturday, a power- play marker during a 6-2 loss to San Jose. He now has 1-1-2 numbers with 27 penalty minutes in 12 games and is unlikely to be in a Generals' uniform any time soon, if ever again. 4WA8 NOVEMBER 7™ TO NOVEMBER 9™, 2003 International Centre AIRPORT ROAD, MISSISSAUGA www.travelandleisureshow.com Your opportunity for great deals and special discounts on a wide variety of trips and destinations.
