Their place in the fun New youth program a hit in Newcastle BY DANIELLE MILLEY Staff Writer NEWCASTLE - Youth here now have a place to call their own - at least Tuesday and Thursday evenings. The Newcastle Youth Program has- been running since mid-October and is drawing more than 20 youths each night. Christine Hinton has been going since the first day. "I love it," site said. "It is so much fun.". The 15-year-old was hanging out with friends on steps at community hall, a common activity for youth in the area, when site was told about the program. It's an extension of the Firehouse Youth Centre in Bowmanville, which offers offers youth a place to participate in activities activities or just hang out. David Smith, co-ordinator of both the Newcastle and Bowmanville programs, said there had been talk in the community community for a few years of having a place for Newcastle youth to go. "There has been that request to get something for kids to keep them off the street and give them something to do," he said. "The community noticed youth were just hanging out in the streets and there wasn't a place for them to go to call ... - miiuu'ji i.. their own. He added the youth were also saying there wasn't a lot for them, to do if they didn't want to spend money. The drop-in recreation program runs at the Newcastle Community Hall Tuesday Tuesday and Thursday nights from 5 to 9 p.m., offering video games, l'oosball tables. tables. board games and a snack bar. Mr. Smith said the response so far has been good. "II' we gel 26 kids in the first three weeks, it's already starting off successful - and that is through word of mouth," he said. Christine is definitely glad it is open. , "It's been so boring in Newcastle," she said. The program is a three-month pilot project that is a partnership between the Firehouse Youth Centre, the John Howard Society, the Municipality of Clarington and Ontario Power Generation. Generation. After three months, Mr. Smith said he hopes the program can get funding from service clubs or other partners. Kristen Grant wants to see it get funding funding as well. The 18-year-old has missed only one night since the program started. She said about 15 of her friends join her for the program. "It's really cool. A lot of my friends are really enjoying it," she said. "It gives us some place to hang out... have fun." Ms. Grant helps if there are any problems. She appreciates the centre because when she moved to Newcastle from Toronto a year ago, she found there was nothing for youth to do.
