WT^.TWfiflf.Ti MliT* PAGE 4 THE CANADIAN STATESMAN, NOVEMBER 12, 2003 www.durhamregion.com Yes indeed, there is a Santa Claus \ Parade takes over Bowmanville on Saturday BY DANIELLE MILLEY Staff Writer CLARINGTON - Santa Claus is coming to Bowmanville. The 42nd annual Bowmanville Santa Claus parade is to make its way through the streets of downtown Saturday Saturday morning. The 14-member parade committee has been busy planning to make this year's event a memorable experience for the thousands of people who come to watch it each year. Valerie Gardiner, the chairman, said there are usually between 65 and 75 entries in the parade including floats, bands and tillers - people who walk along the parade route. The parade, which usually marks the beginning of the holiday season in the area, is a much-anticipated event. Ms. Gardiner, who has been involved involved with the committee for 20 years, said her granddaughter is excited excited about getting to be in the parade now that she is 12. "This, to her. was a turning point in her life." she said. To walk in the parade children have to be 12 or older. Ms. Gardiner attributes part of,the appeal of the parade to the fact there is no advertising allowed. "That way we purify the entries," she said. "All the floats and fillers are associated with Santa Claus or the Christmas season." Samantha Owens-Ghaney likes that aspect of the parade. "People are actually getting into it for the spirit of the parade (not commercial commercial reasons)," she said. Ms. Owens-Ghaney got into the spirit of the parade with her three daughters. She is part of a group of a dozen parents from St. Elizabeth's School in Bowmanville that arc entering a float. The school's entry has won the junior float category a few times. The parents and their children have been working on the 'Mow the Clinch Stole Christmas' Christmas' themed float for four weeks. "It's like a craft night. It's fun." Ms. Owens-Ghaney said. "It's quality time with our children." Her three children - Nichole. Krystal Krystal and Casondra Ghaney - are partici pating in the float. A teacher is playing the Clinch while the younger children are to be transformed into XVlios. The children 12 and older are going to walk behind the float. Ms. Owens-Ghaney and her family are new to the area so they have only watched the parade once. This is the first year they have been involved with the parade. "It will be an ongoing tradition in the family." she said. The parade starts at 10:30 a.m. at the corner of Church and Temperance streets. The route will take it west on Church Street, south on Scugog Street, through downtown on King Street, south on Liberty Street and ends at Memorial Park.
