BY DANIELLE MILLEY Staff Writer BOWMANVILLE - Cathy Abraham Abraham brought a lot of supporters with her to the Municipal Administrative Building Building as she waited to see if she would be elected as one of two trustees for the Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board. Her mother, children and husband sal waiting while she nervously passed the time chatting, awaiting the first results to be posted. "Can we stop now?" she joked from the back of the council chambers when the first results finally came up at 8:35 pan. and had her in second. "It's very nerve-racking," she said of the waiting. By 9:25 pan. Ms. Abraham felt confident confident enough with a 1,000-vote lead over third-place candidate Steven Cooke that she considered sitting down to wait for the rest of the results. . She was joined then in her waiting by incumbent Nancy Coffin who was confident confident she had earned a third term at the board. "I am pleased that the parents of Clarington have trusted me to represent their children for the next three years," Ms. Coffin said. She said she felt confident after seeing seeing the second round of ballots being counted at the Garnet B. Rickard Recreation Recreation Complex and a lot of them had her name selected. But, she wasn't without some nervous nervous jitters going into the election as she was up against more people than she had ever faced before. She also had confidence representing Clarington beside her new fellow trustee. "I'm very pleased to be working with Cathy Abraham," she said. Only after the final results came in did Ms. Abraham breath a deep sigh of relief to know she is joining Ms. Coffin on the KPR board. "I'm relieved that all this hard work has paid off," she said, while celebrating at the Bowmanville Legion with friend and re-elected mayor John Mutton. "I've worked hard for the last several years to be prepared for this job. I look forward to get going." The trustee results were Ms. Coffin 34 per cent, Ms. Abraham 23 per cent, Mr. Cooke 15 per cent, David Sanders 11 per cent, Brian Vanstone 11 per cent and Colin Argyle 7 per cent. Granville Anderson and George Ashe were acclaimed to the Peterborough Victoria Northumberland and Clarington Clarington Catholic District School Board. "I'm glad to see (Mr. Foster) is ahead. I think he'll serve the community very well." Ms. Rowe had publicly supported Mr. Foster as her successor. Ms. Elston, who battled for second place with Mr. Vinson, chose to watch the early results come in on a computer screen in the lobby instead of the crowded council chambers. Trailing Mr. Foster by more than 50 votes, with the distance widening with each update, Ms. Elston said she thought he had the race. "At this point whatever will be, will be," she said. "The beauty of the mail- in-ballot - it is both a blessing and a curse - is that the election was over a week ago." Ms. Elston, who had previously run for regional councillor in 2000 and served two terms as public utilities commissioner, did not run as visible a campaign as some of her opponents. "When you consider I didn't have any signs at all it's a testament that some voters do take the time to read the literature," she said of her showing. Ms. Elston finished second with two votes more than Mr. Vinson. They each won 24 per cent of the vote, Mr. Foster received 28 per cent, Mr. Rai won 21 per cent and Gail Syme came in with 4 per cent. Mr. Rai spent Monday night at home with his family and supporters. "I congratulate Mr. Foster, lie's our councillor. It was a tough campaign," said the first-time candidate. "It was the closest campaign in Durham." He said he put forth the best effort he could and was pleased the race was so close. Mr. Vinson was disappointed with the end result but the first-time candidate candidate said the campaign was a new experience. experience. "I met a lot of nice people that I hadn't hadn't seen for years, that part was great," he said. "It was a good experience, kind of a let down, but it was a good experience." experience." With a stressful campaign behind him, Mr. Foster is looking ahead to his first term. "I want to get a deeper understanding understanding of what the issues are across the ward," he said.
