PAGE A12THE CANADIAN STATESMAN, NOVEMBER 26, 2003 www.durhamrenion.com Sex assault suspect may be linked to more attacks BY STEPHEN SHAW Staff Writer DURHAM - A man arrested arrested for an attempted sex attack in Oshawa has been linked to an earlier knifepoint knifepoint rape of a 16-year-old girl, police say. Durham Regional Police are now probing deeper into the past of a 28-year-old Oshawa man, who was to appear in a bail courtroom today. Police said a sex assault was thwarted early Friday when a motorist observed a man assaulting a woman at the intersection of Simcoe and Bloor streets, and flagged down an officer around 2:20 a.m. The 27-year-old woman was clinging to a utility pole while her attacker tried pulling her away, said Sergeant Paul Malik, police spokesman. The man saw police coming and began walking away, but was arrested. Sgt. Malik said the victim victim was upset but not injured injured during the assault. "She believed the suspect's suspect's intentions were to take her into a nearby creek and sexually assault her," he said. Sgt. Malik praised the unidentified Good Samaritan, Samaritan, who left after alerting police, for possibly preventing preventing a serious assault. He also urged the witness witness to call detectives at the sexual assault unit. Meanwhile, information received during the investigation investigation led to a link in an unsolved unsolved sex assault that occurred occurred last spring - just a few blocks away. On April 19, a 16-year-old girl was attacked around 1:30 a.m. while walking home from work in the Ritson Road South and Dean Avenue area. Sgt. Malik said the teenager was approached by a stranger, who struck up a conversation and asked her to walk with him. The girl agreed at first, but then changed her mind, he said. The attacker forced the victim under a nearby railway bridge, where she was threatened and sexually assaulted at knifepoint, he said. The distraught victim called police following the attack and was taken to the Sexual Assault Assault Care Centre at Lakeridge Health Oshawa. Sex-assault detectives are now taking a closer look at the suspect's suspect's past and reviewing other unsolved cases for any similarities, similarities, Sgt. Malik said. David Michael Barker, 28. of Oxford Street, has been charged with sexual assault with a weapon, forcible seizure, threatening threatening death, and possession of a dangerous weapon in connection with the April 19 attack. Mr. Barker is also charged with attempted sexual assault and assault in relation to Fri day's incident. He was remanded in custody after making a brief video appearance appearance Monday in Oshawa provincial court, and was ordered back in bail court today. Anyone with information about the case should call the sex-assault squad at 905-579- 1520, ext. 5327 or 5345, or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222- 8477. <1.
