1 PAGE B2THE CANADIAN STATESMAN, NOVEMBER 26,2003 www.durhamregion.com Donatis leave Bulls seeing double Twins Justin and Tyler rally Generals for 4-4 draw BY PAUL FUTHEY Staff Writer OSHAWA - The Belleville Bulls opened with three of a kind, but the Oshawa Generals were able to draw even thanks to a pair of Donatis. Justin Donati had two goals and an assist while twin brother Tyler also had a three-point night, including including the tying goal, as the Generals survived an ugly first period to tie the Bulls 4-4 Sunday at the Civic. "It was pretty clear we had to work a little harder and start stepping up our game," said Tyler of the opening frame, in which the Generals were outscored 3- 0, outshot 13-7 and outplayed outplayed by a Bulls team coming off a road game in Sault Ste. Marie the night before. "We stopped playing sloppy," added Justin. "We started looking for each other, started making passes and that was key." Also key was the Gens' power play coming to life late in the second period with a pair of goals. With the Generals trailing 4-1, Tyler Donati's cross-ice pass was hammered by Justin past Bulls netminder Eric Tobia. Less than two minutes later, Justin, cruising cruising behind the net and looking looking for an open man. opted to take the puck out in front himself and pulled the Gens within one. In the third, it was Tyler's turn to score, as he put home a rebound with under six minutes to play. Oshawa would settle for the tie despite dominating the third period and overtime. Generals' head coach George Burnett acknowledged acknowledged there were a number of positive aspects to take from the comeback. "I thought our work and our hustle and energy that we played with drew a lot of power play opportunities which we capitalized on in the latter half of the game," he said. Even so, he pointed out the Generals didn't do themselves any favours by digging a three-goal hole. "You can't put yourself in that situation," he said. "Oui' veteran people - our leadership - we need them to be better and help our team be more prepared to play." In that first period, during during which Burnett described the home side's play as "lazy" and "sluggish", the Bulls took full advantage. The Generals redeemed themselves, however, out- shooting the Bulls 36-23 after the opening 20 minutes. minutes. As for the Donatis, who didn't start the game on the same line, but finished finished together, Burnett said JASON LIEBREGTS/ Statesman photo John Neal (3) of the Oshawa Generals tries to slow the progress of Belleville Bulls' captain Andrew Brown during first period action. The Generals fell behind 3-0, but rallied to earn a 4-4 draw. Midget Toros drop a pair CLARINGTON - The Clarington Bathe and Mclcllan Toros dropped below the .500 mark in minor midget AAA play, dropping a 3-1 decision in Whitby. ' Chris Mcar had a strong game in net facing his old team from last year. He kept the game close, but Clarington Clarington could not capitalize on its chances. Matt Baxter had the only goal on a Eric Visser setup. In Richmond Hill, the Toros came up short losing 4-1 despite another strong effort turned in by Meat; Clarington got on the scoreboard first on a deflected shot from the point and went into the third period tied 1- 1. The goal was scored by GcolT Pow- ell with assists lo Visser and Kyle Goodchild. The Toros sport a 5-7-1 record. m p\ it's important for them not to get complacent and instead instead build on Sunday's performance. performance. "We know they have a nice chemistry together," said Burnett, who opined Adam Berti complemented them well. "They play with a lot of energy and when they have the puck they're a lot of fun to watch." The Generals (7-12-5-1) face a lot of hockey this weekend as they play three road games in three nights: in Kingston Friday (7:30 p.m.), Barrie Saturday (7:30 p.m.) and Sudbury Sunday (2 p.m.). "Next weekend's a big weekend," said Burnett. "If we're well prepared and ready to play, we've got a chance to win." GENERALLY SPEAKING: Tyler Do- nati's three-point night puts him in the top 20 in rookie scoring...Adam Berti chipped in with two assists, including one on Brandon McBride's opening goal...A derisive cheer rose from the majority of the 3,087 in attendance when the Generals managed to clear the defensive zone in the final minute of the first period...George Burnett, who replaced starting goal- tender Ryan Gibb with Dan Thrple at the start of the second period, said the move had nothing to do with Gibb's play. "He was left hanging," Burnett said. "You do that to shake things up."...With the tie, the Generals Generals (0-6-3-1) remain winless winless this season against East Division opponents.
