In his inaugural address Dec. I, Mayor John Mutton said with new projects ready to go, the Municipality is preparing for the best. "Industrial construction is up 50 per cent to $3.5 million," said the mayor in his speech. "Commercial construction is up 500 per cent to $3 million." Institutional construction also went up 50 per cent to $3.5 million while agricultural construction rose 40 per cent to $ 1.1 million. Projected numbers are compared to those collected over the past year. Permits Permits are being considered for a number number of new projects including a new plaza with a million-dollar price tag for Newcastle and a $ 1.55-million commercial plaza in Bowmanvillc. "The resulting job growth and economic economic multiplier effects for Clarington Clarington residents and businesses will be staggering," said the mayor. The Courtice Water Pollution Control Control Plant carries a price tag of $128 million. Mr. Mutton described it as the largest project ever by the Region of Durham. "The first phase of construction for the plant begins in 2006, servicing hundreds of acres of industrial land in south Courtice." Criminal checks needed for board service providers CLARINGTON - All service providers with the Catholic board must now have criminal background checks. In order to protect students, on Nov. 25 Peterborough Victoria Northumberland and Clarington Catholic District School Board trustees passed the motion requiring the checks. The board 'needed to pass the motion motion to comply with a regulation of the Education Act, which requires boards to collect background checks for individuals who are service providers that have both direct and regular contact with students. "It's up to the board to determine who are the ones who require it," said Ray Rigby, superintendent of business business and finance. "The board was thinking more along the lines of people people who work in the cafeterias and drive taxis for the board." Volunteers in the school also need to have the checks done. If an individual is a service provider before Dec. 31, 2003 the board must have either a criminal record check or written confirmation from an employer stating that a criminal criminal record check and an offence declaration declaration have been completed by Dec. 31. In subsequent years starting in 2004 service providers are obligated to submit an offence declaration by Sept. I.
