Categorizing himself as a "finesse player", the Bowmanville Eagles rookie used every bit of his skills in depositing the prettiest goal of the night in a 4-1 win over the Cobourg Cougars Sunday. He used his speed to beat a Cobourg defenceman to the outside, and then, cutting across in front of the net, showed incredible patience, waiting waiting for Jason Knuth to go down before flipping a backhand past the sprawling goaltender. It was the kind of highlight-reel goal that Smith is starting to produce on a regular basis. "He came to us in the summer as a free agent and we said anything we get from this guy will be a bonus," said coach Curtis Hodgins of Smith, 1 whom he described as the best conditioned conditioned athlete on the team. Smith's two-goal performance against Cobourg upped his season totals totals to 14-21-35 through 32 games, and helped the Eagles extend their winning streak to 11 games, including a 2-1 decision in Wellington against the East Conference leading Dukes on Friday night. That Smith has made such a hefty contribution in just his first season with the Eagles shouldn't come as a surprise considering the Peterborough Petes thought enough of the Oshawa resident to make him a third round draft choice in 2000. But injuries prevented him from cracking the roster, and as a result, he sat out last season after playing part- sw# • w Be RON PIETRONIRO/ Statesman photo Matt Caruana (20) tries to fight through the check of Jordan Bonneville (22) during Sunday's 4-1 win by the Bowmanville Eagles over the Cobourg Cougars. I love the game and needed to get back," said the 19-year-old of his return this season. As for opting to play for the Eagles, Eagles, the Monsignor John Percy ma Catholic Secondary School grad said the club's reputation lured him back to the ice. "I heard it was going to be a good team and there were a lot of good guys and a good coaching staff. 1 knew this was a good place to go." Considering the weekend victories improved the Eagles to 20-7-2-3 and solidified their hold on second place in the East Conference, the club has far exceeded any pre-season expectations. expectations. And to think, things could get even better considering the Eagles have added goaltender Joel Whitmarsh and defenceman Kyle Martiniuk from the Sudbury Wolves in the last week. As for Smith, as good as he has been through 32 games, he expects to be even better for the final 17 and into the playoffs. A return to the form that made him a top pick of the Petes is imminent, he predicted. "I've got to work a little harder, but I'm almost there. By playoff time, I'll be ready and in top shape." Good news for the Eagles; bad news for opposing goaltenders.
